Biography

“Walters” is one of the most celebrated surnames in Maroon history, with Kerrod becoming his family’s first Origin representative, when he earned Queensland selection in 1989, winning the man of the match award in Game III.

A dashing, skilful hooker, Walters’ senior career kicked off with Booval Swifts in Ipswich, before he stepped up to the Ipswich Jets.

Alongside twin brother, Kevin and star halfback, Allan Langer, the “Ipswich connection” developed an incredible attacking combination, which wowed fans in the state league and Brisbane competition.

Arthur Beetson came and presented me with my jersey and then I thought, ‘S**t, I'm about to play for Queensland'.

Walters’ distribution from dummy-half, along with his tigerish defence, served him well, and earned him a contract with the Brisbane Broncos, alongside Langer, in 1988.

Two other Walters' brothers, Brett and Andrew, were also signed by Brisbane.

Walters was Dally M Hooker of the Year in 1989 and 1990 and made his international debut on the tour of New Zealand in 1989, and went on to play eight Tests, as well as making the 1990 Kangaroo tour of Britain and France.

He effectively lost his Test, and Origin hooking spot to older brother, Steve, as a result of suspension, which ruled him out of a home Test against the touring Kiwis in 1991. But that same year, Kerrod, Kevin and Steve were chosen for Australia's tour of Papua New Guinea.

Kerrod, alongside Kevin, won premierships with the Broncos in 1992 and 1993, and a World Club Challenge title in 1992.

Walters also was named Broncos' player of the Year in 1992, and best forward in 1993. He played with Adelaide Rams in 1997 and 1998, before a season in England with Gateshead Thunder.

Walters returned to the Broncos in 2000, but played only one NRL game, after a bad ankle injury in the trials.

He was named in the Broncos Team of 25 Years. Walters has served as a board member with Sunshine Coast Falcons.
