Biography

Matt Sing was signed by Penrith after representing Australian Schoolboys in 1992.

Originally from Dysart, where his father worked in the mines, Sing had previously represented Central Queensland Under 17s from the Dysart Bulls, as a halfback.

He made his first grade debut for the Panthers in 1994, and also played for the Australian Under 19 side against Great Britain Colts. Penrith's Rookie of the Year, he was named in the train-on squad for the 1994 Kangaroo tour of Britain and France.

Matt Sing - Saving tries and scoring them

Sing  made his State of Origin debut in 1995, as part of Maroons ‘Neville’s Nobodies’ side, which claimed a famous 3-0 whitewash of the Blues. Later that year, Sing earned a Test debut for the Kangaroos, replacing injured Maroons' team mate, Brett Dallas on the wing.

Sing went on to play 14 Tests, and toured Britain and France with the 2004 Tri-Nations team, coached by Wayne Bennett.

In addition to being a stylish finisher, Sing was a noted defender, saving as many tries as he scored.

A decade of Origin representation is testimony enough to the durability and ability of this twinkle-quick player.

He signed with the Sydney Roosters in 1996, and played in their 14-6 loss to the Broncos in the 2000 NRL grand final. He signed with North Queensland Cowboys in 2002, and became a crowd favourite.

In his first season in Townsville, Sing scored 16 tries in 23 games, winning the Cowboys' Player of the Year and Players' Player awards. He scored a try in the Cowboys' 30-16 loss to Wests Tigers in the 2005 grand final.

After 104 games with the Cowboys, Sing signed a two-year deal with Hull FC in England, and retired at the end of the 2008 season.

He has been inducted into the Cowboys' Hall of Fame, and was named in an 'All-Time Indigenous Queensland' team, prior to a Murri Carnival at Redcliffe in 2021.
