Biography

A wily hooker with toughness to boot, Mount Isa Brothers product Jamie Goddard played four games for Queensland and left his mark in Maroon folklore.

Goddard toured the Pacific with the Under 19 Queensland side in 1991, playing lock against Tonga, Western Samoa, Cook Islands and a Pacific XIII.

He joined Tweed Heads-based Gold Coast Seagulls after the tour, at the urging of North Queensland coaching director, Grant Bell, who had been appointed under 21 coach at the Seagulls.

To eventually go on and play as many games as I did, and to play for Queensland, I consider myself very lucky.

Jamie Goddard FOG #99

Goddard shared accommodation at Tweed Heads with another North Queenslander, Kevin Campion (FOG #121) and the pair quickly became standouts for the struggling club, both playing in the second row in several matches.

Showing his versatility, Goddard played five-eighth for Seagulls against the touring Great Britain side in 1992.

Goddard was released from his Super League contract on compassionate grounds at the end of the 1996 season, and the following year played all three State of Origin matches for Queensland.

In Game III in Sydney, Goddard ensured opposing dummy-half, Andrew 'Joey' Johns had a night to forget, leaving the future 'Immortal' on his backside, after a scuffle began at a scrum.

Johns went looking for Goddard, not realising the Queenslander had a boxing training background in Mount Isa. Queensland lost that series 3-0, but Goddard enjoyed the sweet smell of success in 1998 when he was brought in for the third and deciding game of the series in Sydney, with Queensland winning 19-4.

With the demise of the Chargers at the end of 1998, Goddard joined North Sydney. He stayed on after Norths and Manly-Warringhah combined to form the Northern Eagles in 1999, playing another three seasons in the NRL.

On his retirement, Goddard successfully transitioned into the real estate business.
