'The football will be fast and furious'
Rugby league teams from remote communities across North Queensland will descend on Cairns this weekend for the annual Remote Areas NQ United selection trials.
The regions participating will be Southern Cape (comprising players from Pormpuraaw, Coen Hopevale, Wujal and Cooktown), Northern Cape (players from Aurukun, Napranum, Lockhart River, Weipa), NPA (Bamaga, Injinoo, New Mapoon), Torres Strait and Palm Island.
Queensland Rugby League Northern Division Assistant Division Manager Robbie Moore said every team would play each other over the weekend, with the matches being played at Stan Williams Park on Saturday from 11am.
“The football will be fast and furious and is sure to be well supported by the Cairns community,” Mr Moore said.
“The communities taking part in the carnival love their footy and it’s all about bringing communities together and creating pathways for individuals to get to the next level.
“Often roads are cut off in remote areas of north Queensland, especially during the wet season, so we’re really pleased this carnival will provide opportunities for the region’s most talented players to show their skills.
“We also welcome Skytrans who have partnered with the QRL to support the Remote Areas Rugby League and provide the opportunity for players from remote communities to travel and participate,” he said.
Following the carnival, a Northern United team will be selected to play against Queensland Outback in Cairns on July 16 as curtain-raiser to the Rabbitohs V Cowboys match at Barlow Park.
