The Queensland Rugby League has today outlined the level of support it will provide to the Central Queensland Capras, who have requested assistance from the game’s governing body following a difficult period.
The League is committed to providing the appropriate level of support to ensure the long-term viability of the Capras and has subsequently stepped in to implement key changes to the club’s management and governance structure.
As part of the change, Geoff Murphy has stood down after four years as chairman.
Mr Murphy took over during a tough time and the QRL would like to acknowledge his contribution to the Capras and rugby league in Central Queensland.
An interim chairman has been appointed to assist with the transition process.
This role will be assumed by Terry Mackenroth, a current QRL Independent Director and former Deputy Premier who has previous experiencing in guiding clubs through such a process.
At the heart of the CQ change is a new governance model that will give representatives of the local community a strong voice in the running of the Capras.
The restructure will ensure the club’s management and corporate governance are more in line with the Australian Rugby League Commission and the QRL.
The modifications will effectively allow the club to get on with running its own business, a crucial step forward as the Capras prepare for the 2017 season and beyond.
QRL Managing Director Robert Moore said the change was a timely one given the advancements made to the game’s pathways.
“With the state-wide Under 20s competition coming in for the 2018 season, it is crucial that all clubs have effective management and governance structures in place to ensure they are adequately resourced when greater emphasis is placed on the role of Intrust Super Cup clubs in the elite pathway,” Moore said.
