The Redcliffe Dolphins put the Burleigh Bears to the sword with a 64-6 defeat at Pizzey Park yesterday.
Burleigh never looked in it as the men from the peninsula ran amok, scoring 11-tries to one.
“We stuck to our guns and came away with a really big win. It was very pleasing,” Dolphins coach Troy Lindsay said.
“They were relentless and I think the first half really set it up for us. We had to defend a few sets on our line early and their only points came from a kick so I’m really pleased.
“It’s about doing that each week now. We’ve got to enjoy this and then look to next week.”
The win keeps Redcliffe’s finals hopes alive and the winning margin gives their for-and-against a massive boost.
At halftime the Dolphins led 22-6 and were in control, but few would have predicted the avalanche of points that followed in the second half.
Redcliffe crossed for five tries in the space of 15 minutes early in the second half which saw the margin blow out to 52-6 with just under 20 minutes left. They scored twice more late to make it a 42-0 second half obliteration.
Skipper Luke Capewell finished with a personal tally of 24-points thanks to 10 goals and a try while Tom Opacic and Nick Ritter both crossed for doubles.
In addition; Tristan Lumley, Marlon Doak, Darcy Etrich, Logan Harris, Harley Aiono and Charlie Faingaa got their names on the try-scorers list. Faingaa in particular stood out in the middle with plenty of destructive charges.
For Burleigh, it was a dark day in front of their home crowd and it leaves them searching for answers. Jaiden Hawkes scored their only try in the 24th minute.
It was their third consecutive loss and the third time this year they have leaked 50 points or more.
“I’ve got no excuse for that,” Bears coach Jim Lenihan said.
“I don’t know why we’ve put up a performance like that and it just looks more lacklustre than effort.
“At the end of the day we’re only responsible by our actions and at the moment our actions are really poor.
“There’s no other way around it, we’ve just got to pick ourselves up and get on to next week. We’ll probably have to make some changes and see where we’re going forward.
“We might see if there’s an opportunity for some people to get a go and see who wants to put their hand up.”
