The XXXX Maroons’ quest to bring the State of Origin shield back to the Sunshine State will officially begin when the Queensland team is unveiled at a spectacular Brisbane setting next month.
The ‘Naming of the XXXX Queensland Maroons Lunch’ at the Brisbane Showgrounds on May 19 will provide a unique opportunity for more than 350 guests to send their best wishes to Mal Meninga’s team before they embark on their 2015 campaign.
Hosted in the John Reid Pavilion, the lunch will feature interviews with the XXXX Maroons coach and captain.
Queensland Rugby League will partner with the Australian Defence Force to commemorate 100 years of the Anzacs during the team naming lunch, with former Australian Army soldier Corporal Dan Keighran VC the guest speaker.
Keighran is the third Victoria Cross for Australia recipient and the first soldier from the Royal Australian Regiment to be awarded a Victoria Cross.
In 2010, during his second Afghanistan deployment, Corporal Keighran was part of an Afghan and Australian fighting patrol engaged by a numerically superior and coordinated enemy force near the village of Derapet, Uruzgan province, Afghanistan.
For his actions on this day, Corporal Keighran was subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia.
Guests attending the May 19 event will also hear from players who proudly wore the Queensland jersey in 1975. The 40th anniversary tribute will be led by MC John McCoy, one of the state’s best known sporting commentators.
Bookings for the three course sit-down lunch (including beverages supplied by XXXX) can be made by contacting the QRL on (07) 3367 000 or via email: corporatehospitality@qrl.com.au
The lunch runs from 12noon to 2.30pm
