Queensland Rugby League (QRL) is excited to announce Gympie’s Albert Park as the venue for the annual Queensland Maroons Westpac Fan Day on June 10.

Gympie is the home region of NRL star Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, one of numerous Queensland forwards striving to earn their place in the Maroons’ line up for this year’s State of Origin series.

Fa'asuamaleau played his junior rugby league with the Gympie Devils, whose junior members will now get the unique opportunity to meet their Origin heroes in their own backyard before Game II of the series.

Junior footy is thriving in the region, with the Gympie Junior Rugby League again reporting strong participation numbers in its Under 6 to Under 11 teams.

The Devils senior men are pushing hard for a return to the Sunshine Coast Rugby League A grade competition, while the club’s senior female team has re-formed and is ready to tackle the women’s competition in 2025.

The opportunity for players, coaches, volunteers and officials to meet the Maroons at Albert Park will provide a massive boost for rugby league in the region.

Gympie was chosen as the location for the 2025 Maroons Westpac Fan Day following confirmation of the Queensland team’s return to the Sunshine Coast for upcoming camps.

Maroons coach Billy Slater said the Sunshine Coast / Gympie region had a proud rugby league history, along with an abundance of Queensland’s renowned resilience after rebuilding from the devastating floods in recent years.

“The Queensland rugby league team is an inspiration to so many people,” Slater said.

“We saw what it meant to the people of Toowoomba during last year’s fan day and we would all love to see a repeat of those scenes in Gympie.

“I know we will get a lot out of it as a group, and if recent events like this are a guide, it will have a significant impact on the local community for many years to come.”

Former Queensland Maroons forward and current QRL Central Region Manager Steve Price was in Gympie for today’s announcement alongside a group of excited Devils juniors.

They were joined by Simon Thurbin, Regional General Manager Agribusiness at Westpac, and Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig.

“It’s fantastic to be involved in bringing the game’s elite stars to the grassroots community here in Gympie ahead of State of Origin,” Thurbin said.

“Every single Maroons star that takes to the field during this series started their careers at a ground like this, and our support of Queensland Rugby League is all about supporting the next generation of talent in both the men’s and women’s games.”

Gympie Regional Council is working in conjunction with the QRL to ensure Albert Park is in top condition when it welcomes the Maroons and the expected arrival of thousands of fans.

Mayor Hartwig is thrilled that Gympie has been chosen to host this year’s Queensland Maroons Westpac Fan Day.

“Being chosen to host this event is a wonderful recognition of our region’s proud rugby league history,” Cr. Hartwig said.

“These events draw thousands each year, and being selected is not only an honour – it’s a chance to showcase Gympie and deliver a real economic boost for local businesses.

“On behalf of our entire community, I want to thank Queensland Rugby League for bringing this event to the region, and I encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the atmosphere, and give the Maroons a Gympie welcome they’ll never forget.”
