Queensland Wheelchair Rugby League’s City vs. Country series came to a dramatic conclusion, with Country overpowering City 118-26. With both teams having won a game each leading into Saturday’s clash, this was the perfect opportunity for players to showcase their talent ahead of Queensland Maroons representative selection.

Country took control early, leading 48-20 at halftime before completely running away with the match in the second half. Bayley McKenna was outstanding, scoring seven tries and converting 12 goals, while Pete Arbuckle (4 tries) and Zac Schumacher (3 tries, 5 goals) also starred in the rout.

For City, Dan Anstey and Dylan Gawthorne both crossed for two tries each, with Shannon Buxton also adding to the scoreboard. However, they were unable to match the relentless attacking pressure from Country in the second half.

Despite the loss, City captain Dan Anstey was proud of his side’s effort.
“I’m super proud of the guys and girls who played,” Anstey said.
To see the guys just put in for 80 minutes and pull off some of the plays that we did, I think we did awesome.

On the other side, Country captain Pete Arbuckle credited his team’s preparation for the impressive result.
“It was an intense game regardless of the scoreline,” Arbuckle said.
We prepared really well, so the result shows how much the guys have been putting into training up in Townsville. Where we’re at mentally is preparing for Origin, and this is a great lead-in for us.

While Country’s dominant display grabbed the headlines, this match wasn’t just about the scoreboard. With Queensland Maroons selection on the line, standout performances from both sides will be taken into consideration. The game provided selectors with a final look at players who could represent Queensland at the next level, with skill, effort, and composure under pressure all key factors.

Now, all eyes turn to the official Maroons squad announcement, where the best from both teams will be chosen to represent Queensland on the big stage.
