Wide Bay Bulls will compete solely in the Under 17 male and female competitions in 2025, with provision for 18-years old still in the catchment to play in these teams.
The new structure follows an extensive consultation process and review of the Wide Bay program, which remains an important development area for rugby league in Queensland.
Queensland Rugby League general manager of pathways and performance Glenn Ottaway said the move would strengthen the Wide Bay program.
“Playing exclusively in the Under 17 male and female statewide competitions supports the long-term sustainability of the program, and is designed to create greater capacity for the Bulls to support the talent development programs below this age group through RISE,” Ottaway said.
“This approach also provides opportunities for players who are completing their schooling in the area - an important consideration given some players and their families historically relocate from the region to pursue further opportunities.
“Overall, we feel these measures will support aspirational players in Wide Bay, ensuring they are still given the opportunity to access the pathway programs locally and are well equipped to take the next progression in the pathway post high school.”
The QRL will continue to invest heavily in the region by holding regular visits to the catchment to support the players, coaches and support staff involved in the Bulls’ pathway program.
