Statewide score wrap: Tigers roaring after capturing Emerald's biggest prize

Even if finals footy isn't on the cards for Emerald Tigers, they can be well pleased the Duroux Shield sits in their trophy cabinet for another year.

The battle for the Charlie Duroux Memorial Shield began in 1993 after the Central Highlands Rugby League asked Emerald Tigers to split into two A grade teams, with the locals rivals - now known as Brothers - playing for the silverware ever since.

The shield honours the legacy of the Duroux family to Emerald rugby league and specifically Charlie, the late father to Tigers great John, who was there to watch a worthy contest - the result a 36-34 win to the Tigers.

"It means a lot to the club, there's a lot of important people the shield is named after, big families in the Emerald community, so it means a lot we hold it another year and it's definitely a special moment, one that gets circled on the calendar every year," Tigers coach Geoff Bush said.

"It doesn't matter where either team is coming, it's always one both teams get up for whether we're both coming last or one's going good and one's going not so good, but both teams are playing good footy in and around the edge of the finals."

It was a thriller for the fans at a packed Alan McIndoe Oval, with the Tigers jumping to a 24-6 lead at half-time before holding off Brothers, who were coming home with a wet sail.

"We come with a game plan to move their big boys around, which I think worked for us, got them tired, so we shot out to a pretty handy lead going into halftime," Bush said.

"It was nerve-wracking towards the end there because we were in full control at half-time and sort of went away and dropped a couple of balls, made a few errors, our discipline went out a bit up in the air and let them back in... but we held on in the end.

"(Brothers) have got some big games coming up, so they really needed to beat us on the weekend."

Tigers backrower Whetu Austin earned the Jack Hornery Medal for player of the match after scoring a double and proving a menace for the 80 minutes, while skipper Marvin Huet's accuracy with the boot, recording 6 from 6, was crucial to the win.

The match was also a special one for consistently elite halfback Ryley Parter, who played his 100th game on Saturday night and was duly recognised as players' player.
