Coaches' call: Hostplus Cup Round 21 preview

Round 21 of the Hostplus Cup will be headlined by a top three showdown, as minor premiership favourites Northern Pride take on the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

In a tantalising preview of finals footy action, the Pride and Falcons will give fans a glimpse of what to expect in September when they meet at Barlow Park, where the Pride are undefeated this year.

Elsewhere, the second-placed Norths Devils will meet Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the Sunday feature match, as the Seagulls fight to keep their finals hopes alive.

Here is what the coaches had to say ahead of Round 21.

Hostplus Cup Round 21

Northern Pride v Sunshine Coast Falcons

Northern Pride coach Eric Smith: Obviously we're sitting in a good spot heading into these last three weeks. But more importantly than where we're sitting, I feel like we've built really well throughout the season and have a good understanding of our style of football and our defensive system. That's more pleasing for me than sitting in the top spot on the ladder. Obviously having a top two spot locked up is great and having two home semi-finals is awesome. Our fans have been amazing for us this year. It's a nice position but the more pleasing thing is how well we've built our football and how comfortable the guys feel with our style of football at the moment. Moving forward, our main focus is making sure we're able to perform well against another top four team this weekend. The Falcons are a really good, quality opposition in great form and who play not too dissimilar to us. You can tell they're heavily a Melbourne Storm feeder team with some of the things they do. They won't beat themselves so we need to be at our best.

Sunshine Coast Falcons coach Brad Henderson: I feel great with where we're sitting but I know we're vulnerable. The ladder is so close and so congested. Wins in these last three weeks are vital, particularly if we want to stay in the top four. It's a good reward for a solid year but it's also that extra shot you need going into the semi-finals. We can hold onto a top eight spot comfortably but we're vulnerable to dropping out of the top four. With the exception of Northern Pride, everyone is beating everyone at the moment, so it shows it's a tight competition. Now we have the Pride this weekend. I hope it's going to be a competitive game. It's hard to know what to expect. It's been so long since we played them last but defensively they're rock solid. They put scoreboard pressure on the opposition in every game they're in. They've kept the same halves for the majority of the year behind a really big, powerful forward pack that does their job really well. It's hard to pinpoint their major threats but if Jake Clifford is on the field, they're a dangerous team. Tom Duffy has a great short kicking game. There's red flags all over the field. We have to make sure we're really good in systems and processes and back ourselves on the day. We need to make sure we have 50 per cent of the ball to do that.

Redcliffe Dolphins v Ipswich Jets

Redcliffe Dolphins coach Ben Te'o: We're pretty happy with where we're sitting. We haven't got the results the whole way through but we have a few back from injuries. We're probably heading in the right direction. We're top four at the moment and that's important to us. We were in a similar position last year and we slipped into fifth place. In the end we got done in week one of the finals. It's a good opportunity to learn a lesson and finish in the top four to have two shots at it. Watching the Jets play last week, they've improved a lot this year and there's a lot of fulltime players from the Titans getting good minutes with them. They're a tough team. We had real problems at the start of the year. they're always dangerous, teams that can't make the finals. We're very well aware of that.

Ipswich Jets coach Tye Ingebrigtsen: Defence is something we have been working hard on over the last month and we were rewarded for that over the weekend (with the win over the Cutters). We also had a completion rate of 84-85 per cent; our goal is at least 80 per cent over 80 minutes to give ourselves every opportunity to win. Redcliffe have a couple of quality players coming back in Trai Fuller and Josh Kerr, who have both played plenty of NRL. Trai is a huge threat and hard to handle, so we need to minimise him the best we can. And Josh Kerr and Nathan Watts run hard through the middle, and they have an offload in them, so we need to be on that. It's important we finish strong... last year we didn't win a game, but we've won three of the last four games so there is a real buzz around the club. We need to finish strong with the goal of taking that into pre-season and season 2025.

Norths Devils v Wynnum Manly Seagulls

Norths Devils coach Dave Elliott: We can see that every team is lifting their game despite being three weeks away from finals, which is generally the nature of the end of season with teams still pushing for top eight and top four. We certainly realise that we also need to lift our own game. For us, we're pushing for the top two which certainly gives advantages which you obviously need to take. We spoke about it quite sometime ago. We just need to make sure we're also improving because the Falcons are right on our heels and Redcliffe seem to have found a little bit of form and have a really good side with Trai (Fuller) and Josh Kerr coming back into that team. I'm sure this week we'll be a facing a determined, motivated team. They've been out of the winner's circle a little bit lately but they've still got quality across the park. They've had a couple of big travel weeks and I'm sure they'll be primed and ready with a game here in Brissie.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls coach Mat Head: The last month hasn't been anywhere near the football we'd like to be playing. We have some circumstances around that but we have to win footy games. We have three games to go and probably need to win all three of them. That starts this week with Norths. They're a quality football team and have been up near the top for the whole season. They played against a good Tweed team last week and I'm sure they'll get over that loss pretty quickly. We have to find our defence. We've leaked too many points in the last couple of weeks. We're down in confidence and need to start well and build some momentum and get that belief back. We just have to go and transfer it from training onto the footy field.

PNG Hunters v Tweed Seagulls

PNG Hunters coach Paul Aiton: We're a little bit disappointed from last week but we've moved on. We were trying not to focus on the finals. We were trying to focus on each game. But we have discussed finals now because of the position we've got ourselves in. If we can win the last three, we'll play finals, which is good. That's been brought up within the team and it starts this weekend against Tweed. Both teams need to win to continue. It's a big one, which we know. We've made it a bit hard for ourselves, but it's alright. We're expecting a tough game. It's almost like we are in finals already. We just need to stick to what we know and what we're good at and what got us into the position to begin with. We just need to stick to what's been working for us. That's it. I don't expect anything more than what they've already shown they can do.

Tweed Seagulls coach Dave Penna: Semi-finals is the last thing on the mind for us. If all the planets align, you're a chance. But from where we were in the middle of the year with injuries and players being out and where we were sitting as a team, we're just rapt as a club to be back and have our strongest side back on the park and playing good footy. That's pleasing to know we're doing the right things. Unfortunately the ball doesn't always bounce the way you want it to so we're happy to be winning some games and getting some results. We have a physical game this weekend. They're a side that can score from anywhere on the park, they're strong and we're expecting a really, really trough game.

Western Clydesdales v Brisbane Tigers

Western Clydesdales coach Jason Alchin: Comments to come.

Brisbane Tigers coach Matt Church: Quite happy with our result on the weekend; we've worked really hard the last six to seven weeks, and with our history with the Bears over the last little bit, we knew that it would go down to the wire and we would need to step up if the opportunity came and we did, getting the kick. We need to keep competing and build on the momentum from the weekend. There are things that need to go our way to get to the finals, but we control our own destiny in terms of putting ourselves in a good place to get there. If we do get there, people should be looking over their shoulders. I think we would surprise a few people.
