Round 20 Saturday wrap: Dolphins get 'much-needed' win against Hunters

Redcliffe Dolphins put on a masterclass against PNG Hunters at Kayo Stadium, keeping the Hunters scoreless in the first half and securing the win with a solid second half.

Dolphins winger William Dobson scored the first two tries of the game - both within the first 10 minutes - and the Dolphins never looked in trouble as the Hunters struggled to find form.

The Hunters found a spark nearing the end of the game, scoring three tries within the final 15 minutes, but it wasn't enough.

Dolphins captain Max Bailey - playing for his mum and nan, Helen and Cathy, and partner Kalyca in Harvey Norman Women in League Round - said he was happy to get the win after last week's loss to Central Queensland Capras in Middlemount.

"First off, shout out to mum and nan, they raised me and I wouldn't be where I am without them today and my partner Kalyca, she moved up here from New South Wales with me to let me follow my dream and go on this journey... shout out to those girls," Bailey said.

"We needed that win after last week... we were very disappointing against Capras and we needed to turn it around because it's getting to the tight end of the season, so very happy with that," Bailey said.

"I think we just got our attack back in action... last week we really struggled, but we put some points on today and we defended really well for about 60 minutes so still a bit to work on, but we definitely improved from the week before.

"I thought our back rower Jaron Purcell was awesome, our forward pack was amazing and big Valynce Te Whare, in the centres, absolutely carved... he missed out last week but he showed exactly why he's back in the team... he killed it.

"Everyone who has watched the Hunters play know they get momentum and they hold it pretty well so we were lucky that we put a fair few points on when we were rolling... still a bit to work on to make sure we close out games."

Hunters captain Ila Alu said "it was a tough game from the start".

"The Dolphins dominated the game from start... they had all the position... full credit to them... they created all the opportunities they had and they cashed in so congratulations to them," Alu said.

"We just didn't respect the ball well enough to be in the game but full credit to the boys, they didn't give up... we fought until the end.

"I think Judah Rimbu was a standout. Played the entire 80... there's a lot there's been asked of him this season and he's kept turning up and kept contributing... you can't ask for more... really proud of his effort, to be out there putting in continuous effort in defence, directing traffic in the middle. Full credit to him."

Alu, noting it is Harvey Norman Women in League Round, said he owed a lot to his mum.

"My mum back at home.... to see her never give up helping us, supporting us in chasing our dream, I couldn't be more proud of my mum for all that she has done to make me who I am," Alu said.

Elsewhere, Tweed Seagulls' Malakhi Donovan scored a double as his side got a four-point win over Norths Devils.

Northern Pride's Tom Chester and Braidon Burns both scored doubles as their side kept Western Clydesdales scoreless.

Central Queensland Capras scored eight tries to Wynnum Manly Seagulls' two in Rockhampton.

Lastly, Townsville Blackhawks centre Gehamat Shibasaki scored two of his side's seven tries in their win over Souths Logan Magpies, who had Tyson Smoothy line up for them for the first time this year, in Townsville.
