Statewide score wrap: Skipper's broken rib doesn't dampen premiership sweetness

"Not mixed emotions, it's good"

No one was prouder than Hannah Clarke seeing Wranglers get the job done in the Mount Isa Rugby League women's grand final on Friday night despite being unable to play her part on the field.

The captain throughout the season suffered a broken rib playing for Queensland Outback at the XXXX 47th Battalion carnival, ruling her out of the decider, but has formed an instrumental part in making sure teammates tick all the boxes in a growing competition.

"I got a broken rib playing for Outback, but the girls didn't need me, they were good," Clarke said.

"We had eight of our girls go down for (XXXX 47th Battalion) so everyone came back a little bruised and busted from that.

"But three in a row, you don't get to say that very often, so the girls are pretty happy with that.

"They didn't need any words of wisdom from me, they were too busy telling me to shut up. I'm not very good on the sideline, I get in the wrong spot all the time.

"In defence they kept showing up. Without playing consistent football it's hard to get into a rhythm and get any fitness, but they kept turning up.

"In Nines, it's very difficult to keep a score to zero, so to be able to do that was a pretty good effort.

"We did a lot of work throughout the year and we talked about defence, Col (Ryder, coach) was pretty big on that.

"It means a lot to them, it has been a big long season and the girls dug in and got it done, so happy days."

Clarke said seeing so many girls playing in the juniors gave her hope a thirteen-a-side competition - compared to the current Nines format - wasn't too far away and could support players looking to go further, or simply enjoy the game in the remote north west of the state.

"Nines is keeping the footy alive for the moment, but if we keep get more of these young girls coming up and keep a few of these old girls around then maybe (13s) is where it will go

"We don't want to see (juniors) getting to Open age and dropping out because there's nothing for them, we want to see a clear pathway for them."

Members of the QRL Officiating High Performance Unit played a major part in the senior grand finals across the weekend, volunteering their time to control the women's decider as well as the men's decider, the latter held after Saturday's Hostplus Cup match between Townsville Blackhawks and Brisbane Tigers as part of Country Week, presented by Ford.

The men's decider had some slick skills for the first half until - unusually for this time of year - driving rain wrought havoc, with the John Doyle-coached Townies holding on to their first early lead to beat Wanderers 30-6.
