Round 19 Saturday wrap: Capras fire; Falcons remain top four

The Central Queensland Capras have kept their place in the top eight, knocking off the Redcliffe Dolphins on day one of Country Week, presented by Ford.

Putting two recent losses behind them, the Capras returned to the winner's circle with a commanding 38-10 victory over the Dolphins at Middlemount's Norm Blanche Oval.

In the final match of the opening day of Country Week, the Capras came out firing and were unable to be reined back in, running in seven tries to two.

Setting a strong precedent in defence, their attack flowed smoothly off the back of it, with Dolphins NRL affiliates Anthony Milford and Edrick Lee in fine form, as Lee bagged a hat-trick.

Captain Jack Madden - who also welcomed his second child just two days before game day - said the defence set the platform for the win, in one of their strongest performances of the season.

"We’ve had a tough run lately but I thought we put some of our best footy together today and we have to keep doing that moving forward," Madden said.

"Everything was coming off the back of our defence. We defended really well and when we get that right, everything flows off the back of it.

"Attacking-wise, we went really well as well."

The race for this year's finals series remains tight, with the Townsville Blackhawks also picking up a vital win in Mount Isa on Saturday, overcoming the Brisbane Tigers 30-18.

The Blackhawks are just one point outside the eight, with the Capras' win holding Townsville out for another week.

Madden said they're aware of the logjam through the middle of the table and know that every game is crucial from here on out.

"Every game is important now leading into the finals and we have to take it a week at a time," he said.

"I thought it was a great performance today and a step in the right direction.

"It all comes down to our defence. We have to keep defending really well. We get a lot of energy out of that and we just played really well together.

"At times in the past, we don’t do things together and it hurts us. I’m really pleased with tonight’s performance."

Elsewhere on Saturday, the Sunshine Coast Falcons finished on top of Ipswich Jets in a cracking game of rugby league at South Kolan, just outside of Bundaberg.

A boisterous crowd watched on during the hard slog of a game.

Falcons captain Sam Burns said, “I don’t really know how to explain that game”.

“It was really, really tough early… a good arm wrestle,” Burns said.

“Got a bit scrappy at the end because it went dropped ball for dropped ball… probably wasn’t either team that wanted to go away with it in the second half… lucky that we put in the work in the first half to get in front and we held on.

“Standout performers would be Jav, our right backrower….he was really, really strong… and Scott Galeano, our outside back. And our middles… probably no standouts but our middles held down the middle.

"It was a really heavy pitch out there, fair bit of possession, so there was a lot of feet moving.

“Biggest takeaway is probably just the need to hold the ball and completions for us. It’s probably been out kryptonite for a majority of the year… we can score points and we’re really relentless defensively, but we’re just doing way too much of it because we’re dropping the ball.

"It just comes back to fundamentals, being switched on and a little bit of timing and combinations.

“Something to go back to and work on … we’ve got to get it out of our game in the business end of the season.”

Burns said it was a great to play in front of a boisterous crowd for Country Week, presented by Ford.

“There’s crowd everywhere. Heaps of noise coming from the beer shed. Both sides had heaps of support. All the locals came out which was good,” Burns said.

In Tamborine Mountain, the Souths Logan Magpies upset the Burleigh Bears 32-18 with rugby union convert Glen Vaihu scoring a double off the bench.

In Bowen, Norths Devils had an explosive second half to put the Mackay Cutters away at 32-18.

And in Cooktown, the competition-leading Northern Pride continued their winning run with a 32-12 victory over Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

In the final day of Country Week action, the Western Clydesdales will play host to the Tweed Seagulls in the broadcast feature match.
