Round 18 Sunday wrap: Lipp shines in Kav Cup win over Dolphins

Norths Devils claimed the Kav Cup over Redcliffe Dolphins - a trophy honouring stalwart of the Devils and Dolphins Steve Kavanagh - with a tight, hard-fought win at Bishop Park.

The battle of two of the Dolphins NRL affiliate clubs was a high-scoring contest that included Devils duo Jordan Lipp and Jeremiah Simbiken score doubles and Dolphins centre Valynce Te Whare get a hat-trick.

The Devils went into half-time up 26-10, but the Dolphins never let up, just missing out on the two points.

Devils fullback Jordan Lipp, who claimed player of the match honours, said he was pleased the large and boisterous crowd got to watch such a high-scoring, entertaining game.

"Massive win today going into the bye... good work from the boys," Lipp said.

"They got one up on us earlier this year so we knew it was going to be tough and gritty today, so we just made sure we came out and put in a big performance... also after the way we performed against PNG (last week), we weren't really up to standard.

"It was a scrappy win, but two points is two points.

"I think right across the board we were good... Tesi Niu, I don't know how many tackle breaks he had, Julian Christian was really good down that right edge, all of our middles were good, they're always good, so right across the board, we were good today."

Lipp said the main thing moving forward into the back end of the season was the need to close out games.

"Closing out games... whether it's at the back end of the first half, or the back end of the second half, we try and make it a big focus," Lipp said.

"Sometimes it just doesn't happen the way we want it to, but closing out games and finishing how we want to (is what needs to happen)."

Te Whare said it was "a very tough game".

"We were just trying to stay in it, stay in the grind with the boys... it was an up and down game but it's all learning from here," Te Whare said, adding his side needed to "try and get some more ball".

"It didn't help that I had to go wing, centre, wing, centre... then our centre went down so it was a struggle to stay in it, but in all honesty, we just need to start a bit stronger, hold the ball and stay in it.

"Everyone did their job... even though it doesn't really show on the scoreboard... at the same time, we came back, you know... a couple of kicks could've got us over the line, but hey, that's alright... we go back to the drawing board and see what happens next round.

"It's like playing our own boys because it's Redcliffe versus Redcliffe basically.... next round we play Capras, which is another Redcliffe team... it's always good to verse the boys... they give it to you, you give it to them... it's all brotherhood at the end of the day."

Elsewhere, Sunshine Coast Falcons fullback Zacariah Miles scored a double in his side's win over Mackay Cutters.

PNG Hunters five-eighth Joshua Lau scored a hat-trick in Port Moresby to help his side secure the two points over Central Queensland Capras.

Northern Pride centre Will Partridge crossed twice as his side finished on top in their close contest with Brisbane Tigers.

And Ipswich Jets ran riot against Western Clydesdales in Ipswich to round out Family in League Crazy Sock Round.
