A classic "tale of two halves" has seen the Townsville Blackhawks and Burleigh Bears battle to a draw on Saturday, keeping the standings tight on the Hostplus Cup ladder.

With a late try to Blackhawks flyer Dudley Dotoi, Townsville managed to lock in the 18-all draw on home turf at Jack Manski Oval, overcoming a second half fightback from the Bears.

The Blackhawks came racing out of the blocks in the opening stanza, bagging a double in the first 10 minutes, with tries to Jayden Hodges and Dotoi. Kalifa Faifai Loa then extended that lead in the 24th minute.

Burleigh hooker Pat Politoni managed to secure his side a single four-pointer before the break, but the Blackhawks went into the sheds up 12-4.

The momentum then swung the Bears' way in the second stanza with tries to Mitch Watson, Kea Pere and Ethan O'Neill.

But Dotoi crossed in the 79th minute with Bailey Biondi-Odo kicking the conversion that equalled the game.

Blackhawks coach Terry Campese said while they wanted the win, they will take any points they can get to keep afloat in the logjam in the middle of the table.

"It was two halves of footy," he said.

"Our first 20 minutes was pretty clinical and everything that we spoke about. We were on the front foot and the boys were executing exactly what we went into the game trying to do.

"It swung to Burleigh in the second half and we were on the back foot.

"But to be six points down with two minutes to go, we’ll take whatever points we can get.

"I still believe that Burleigh are one of the best sides in the competition, for sure. They’re coached really well. Luke (Burt) is an exceptional coach.

"They have really big senior leaders who stand up in these situations. We just need to look at that first 20 and see what it takes to be clinical moving forward."

Bears coach Burt echoed Campese's thoughts on how the match played out.

Coming off the bye, Burt believes the Bears had a slow start.

The competition will now have another week off - except for a make up clash between the Sunshine Coast Falcons and PNG Hunters next Sunday - and Burt said it's a crucial time for the Bears to look at where they're at and where they want to be as they push for finals.

"We put ourselves in a poor position at halftime with the way we completed in the first half and the possession we gave the Blackhawks in the first half," he said.

"It was a slow start. A bit of our detail defensively wasn’t up to scratch early on in the match. We spoke about that at halftime and definitely turned it around.

"We’ll have the week off now and reassess where we’re at and what we want to look like as a side before the semis.

"It’s a tight competition and you can’t drop any games. Every game is important and we’ll be concentrating on that rest of the season."

Elsewhere on Saturday, the Tweed Seagulls dominated the Souths Logan Magpies at Cbus Super Stadium, earning a much-needed two points.

Tom Weaver bagged a double in the curtain raiser to the Gold Coast Titans' NRL match.

There will be five games on Sunday to close out Round 18, with Brisbane Tigers to meet the Northern Pride in the feature broadcast match.

The Mackay Cutters will take on the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

The PNG Hunters will play host to the Central Queensland Capras.

Norths Devils and Redcliffe Dolphins will go head-to-head in a top four clash at Bishop Park.

And in the final match of Family of League Crazy Sock Round, the Ipswich Jets will meet the Western Clydesdales.
