Statewide score wrap: BRL boilover list grows after epic round

The 2024 Brisbane Rugby League Premier A grade season has been one of boilovers and they were delivered again in Round 12.

Souths Juniors were the headline, repeating what they did in Round 3 by defeating last year's minor premiers, Bulimba.

Up until Saturday, it was the Magpies only win for the season. They posted a last-minute draw against Normanby, however in the remaining nine fixtures they have struggled.

Khan Ah Wang returned with two crossings along with Bailey Trew for Souths in a 30-22 win at home.

The loss still has Bulimba in equal fifth, as for the Magpies, spring is just around the corner (Brisbane winter keeps getting shorter), and we know how vicious a Magpie is around that time.

Defending premiers Wynnum Manly Juniors have stumbled mid-season. With closes losses of late, they tested West Brisbane in Round 11 and took that style of footy to Emerson Park against Valleys to win 24-16.

Seagulls coach Jason Harris lamented close losses leading up to Round 12.

"The boys have been there abouts, doing some good things and then some dumb things." he said.

"Against the Panthers we stepped back to playing Wynnum style footy. We played that style again and finally stayed in the game when it mattered against a strong Valleys side”.

Back rower Tieran Ross chalked up a treble, putting Wynnum Manly Juniors just outside the top five, by one point. Valleys hold on to equal fifth.

Beenleigh chalked up a sixth straight win after defeating Redcliffe in thriller at Kayo Stadium, downing the home side 26-24.

Few could have seen this result coming after an opening half that had the Dolphins camped on the attack for the most part, but the Pride weren't in the mood for handing out permits to the in-goal area willy-nilly, setting up the win to the shock of the 'Phins fans.

Beenleigh’s Kylem Vunipola and Beni Allen scored doubles, while Dolphins Sully Hoad also crossed twice.

The Pride are equal third with Redcliffe and just a point short of the all-important second spot.

Elsewhere the Panthers were too strong for Normanby at Bert St Claire Oval, winning 62-10 to remain undefeated, while Carina held off the improving Brighton Roosters 34-30 at Leo Williams Oval.

The competition takes a break this weekend for the XXXX Chair’s Challenge representative weekend at North Ipswich Reserve, where two Brisbane teams will take on Gold Coast and Ipswich, with players battling for City selection.
