Round 16 Saturday wrap: Falcons win 'epic' encounter with Seagulls

Sunshine Coast Falcons finished victors in a tough encounter with Wynnum Manly Seagulls at BMD Kougari Oval.

The Hostplus Cup Round 16 clash - played in front of a rowdy Chook Pen - saw Wynnum Manly debutant Fua Schwalger score a double, a double head injury assessment for the Sunshine Coast through friendly fire, two sin-bins and the match-winning try minutes out from full-time.

Sunshine Coast skipper Sam Burns said "that was epic, that game".

"I tell you what, we earned the two points through every second and every effort there," Burns said, adding the Falcons middles really stood up.

"We had a lot of boys get injured, and a lot of boys that were a bit busted, and we just kept turning up... we kept our feet moving... it was a win based on effort.

"It was tit for tat there... we just won the contest late there and won it... it really could've gone either way... we were really, really lucky that we came away with that.

"Biggest takeaway would 100 per cent be just winning with that 'no matter what' mentality because we versed these boys earlier in the year and we were up with 10 minutes to go and they came away with it, with two tries late, so I guess we came away with a couple of lessons from that and we turned it around today, which is awesome."

Wynnum Manly skipper Bryce Donovan said "that one hurts".

"We had a few chances to put it away and obviously didn't... myself included... I probably hurt us a couple of times there at the end, so it's disappointing," Donovan said.

Donovan said a positive to take away was his side's three debutants - Ethan Malt, Cameron Bukowski and Fua Schwalger - all stood up.

"We had a few boys debut... we had Malty (Ethan Malt) on my back row... first game for the club... his old man played for the club, so that was pretty special," Donovan said.

"Young Cam Bukowski, Queensland Under 19 rep, he played pretty well... and then we had big Fu join us midweek from Toowoomba and he scored two tries.

"We stayed in the grind a lot longer than what we have been... we've probably been up and down now for about six weeks and we wanted to stay in the grind... we worked hard, can't fault the effort, so that's pleasing... that's been a lot better than what it has been but we've just got to be a bit more polished towards the end."

Elsewhere, Northern Pride winger Robert Derby scored a hat-trick in his side's win over Mackay Cutters in Cairns.

Norths Devils scored six tries to the Townsville Blackhawks' two to claim the two points in Townsville.

Burleigh Bears had a field day against Western Clydesdales, scoring nine tries, with Guy Hamilton converting all nine.

Tomorrow, Souths Logan Magpies and Brisbane Tigers clash at Davies Park

Redcliffe Dolphins and Tweed Seagulls battle it out for the two points and the Liam Hampson Cup.

And to round out the round, Ipswich Jets host PNG Hunters.
