Statewide score wrap: Seagulls rise to Push-Up Challenge for mental health support

Runaway Bay Seagulls players have been doing some extras at training in recent weeks participating in the Push-Up Challenge.
The Push-Up Challenge is focused on the push for better mental health through fitness - a cause close to the heart of many players and volunteers at the club - and raises money for support groups.
Perhaps the physical nature has been a benefit for the men's A grade team in particular, who on Sunday enjoyed an important win away from home against Currumbin Eagles.
Zane Lothian and Jayden Alaiasa both scored doubles for the Seagulls, who are led by former Burleigh Bears Hostplus Cup star Kurtis Rowe.
Getting the club involved in the Push-Up Challenge, which has been running from June 5 and officially concludes on June 28, followed the suggestion from senior committee member Tracy Loango-Manning after she did the challenge last year.
The daily target for the number of push-ups needed to be completed is determined by specific mental health facts each day, with the 3249 push-up target for the 24-day period of the challenge representing lives lost to suicide in 2022.
Loango-Manning said she thought it was a great opportunity for the Seagulls to make a difference in the community, raising money for Lifeline and headspace along the way.
"It's a fun way to get people aware of what's happening," she said.
"I did it last year and then I thought about how they could incorporate it into their training and warm-up.
"They've been really good. Some of them don't really want to do push-ups but I kind of make them.
"If me, at my age - I could be their mum - so if I can do push-ups, so can they."
Spectators tipped into the fundraising cause at their most recent home game, adding small amounts to canteen purchases and dropping money into a bucket being carted around by junior players.
"I know one of the players got grilled about mental health issues and what he knows and apparently he answered all the questions really well, and he was only 12, so that got the message out as well," she said.
Loango-Manning said she hoped the club's participation showed people involved with Runaway Bay and in rugby league across the Gold Coast that people cared and wanted to support anyone in a difficult situation.
"There's so many people in clubs that are experiencing something, and we tend to want to help those people, and that's what I've experienced at Runaway Bay," she said.
Runaway Bay will have one final push (up) for donations at home at Bycroft Oval this Saturday, coinciding with senior men's matches from midday.
