Round 15 Sunday wrap: Bears back with a bang

The Burleigh Bears have put two back-to-back losses behind them to return to the winner's circle in style.

Continuing the trend of a high-scoring XXXX Rivalry Round, the Bears put on a massive 56-14 scoreline over their local foes in the Tweed Seagulls to take the two points on home turf at UAA Park on Sunday.

Led strongly by skipper Sami Sauiluma - in his 150th Hostplus Cup game - and with Cole Geyer adding plenty of zip from the bench, it was a win that Burleigh needed as they build towards another finals campaign.

Sauiluma said after the match it was a relief to secure a win.

"It's been a tough couple of weeks," he said.

"We just wanted to put together even a good 60 minutes. We were still a bit scrappy but getting back in the winning circle is always good, especially against Tweed being Rivalry Round.

"We're still building as a team. We haven't really put together a good 80 minutes yet - maybe once or twice.

"But we're constantly working on being better, especially with this next block of footy. We're trying to be better every week.

"We're not happy with letting 14 points in still so plenty to work on, but up from here."

The Bears scored a mammoth 10 tries to Tweed's three, with backrower Josh Patston crossing twice.

Josiah Karapani opened the scoring for the home team in his return from the NRL with the Brisbane Broncos while Sauiluma, Geyer, Hayden Schwass, Kea Pere, Josh Rogers, Charlie Murray and Bailey Butler added to the tally.

Sauiluma was particularly impressed with Karapani and Geyer, as well as Broncos affiliate prop Fletcher Baker, who played just his second game for the Bears.

It was also a celebration for halfback Guy Hamilton, who reached his 150th Cup game milestone as well.

"He's been so good for us since he's come over to us," Sauiluma said of Hamilton.

"He's so important to our club. He's the energy bunny in and around our team. I'm just happy that we could get him the win for his 150th and make it memorable for him."

Elsewhere, the second-placed Devils remained in touch with the competition-leading Northern Pride, with a solid 38-10 victory over the Souths Logan Magpies.

Fullback Jordan Lipp added to his try-scoring tally this year with another double at Davies Park.

Both the Devils and Pride sit on 24 points, with Wynnum Manly in third on 21 points.
