Statewide score wrap: Pirates turn kindy kings amid footy buzz

The hottest ticket in Tieri is a Peak Downs Pirates home game and win or lose, it's paying dividends for the community in a fundraising partnership with the local kindergarten.

The Pirates hosted defending premiers Clermont Bears on Friday night, their first home game since April, and the support was there once again.

It was a tough night on field at Tieri Oval for the Pirates, who despite scoring four tries of their own, conceded 11 tries to go down 60-18.

Peak Downs Pirates coach Mitch Reinke said while results generally haven't been kind to them this year - having just one win from eight starts - it hasn't stopped the community turning up.

"The last couple of weeks have been tough, but it's tough with shift work and rosters out here, and all the teams out here go through the same thing and we haven't got the few years' experience - a few of the guys it's only their first or second year playing," he said.

"It'd be nice to win a few more games, but honestly at the moment it doesn't seem to bother the community too much, they come down and support us anyway.

"It's been awesome, our home support has been unreal the past two years since we got back into the competition.

"Dysart and Clermont are two of the strongest teams in the competition and we get crowds as big as theirs.

"I played A grade out here for Tieri before it folded 10 years ago, grew up in Tieri, worked here all these years and you don't realise when it's not happening, but as soon as the club came back in last year there's that different feeling around the town.

"Everyone gets that bit of a buzz around it and it's a good social outing for everyone, so you definitely feel the support from the town."

It counts most for the club's fundraising efforts, this year partnering with the C&K Tieri Community Kindergarten to help them access more play and education equipment for the kids.

"We ran a Mother's Day raffle with the kindergarten and got all the local businesses to donate gifts and did a $500 board and we're going to do a similar Father's Day type one as well," Reinke said.

"I think we raised about $1000 and it didn't cost either of us anything.

"Because Tieri's only a small town, a few us have got nephews and nieces and sons and daughters in the kindergarten this year, so we thought we'd try to help out a bit. It's a great feeling."
