QRL receives major accolade at Pride in Sport Awards

Queensland Rugby League (QRL) has received national recognition as an inclusive sport after being awarded Bronze Tier Status at the annual Pride in Sport Awards.

Since becoming a member of Pride in Sport three years ago, the QRL has led the way in showcasing its commitment and dedication to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Pride in Sport national program manager Beau Newell acknowledged the QRL’s extensive work across the game.

“We extend our congratulations to Queensland Rugby League for attaining Bronze tier status in this year's Pride in Sport Index,” Newell said.

“This accomplishment showcases its continued commitment to fostering greater inclusion and diversity, benefiting LGBTQ+ players, volunteers, fans, and all individuals associated with the sport.

“By attaining this level of recognition, Queensland Rugby League underscores its dedication to embracing diversity, thereby contributing to the creation of a more inclusive environment not only for its supporters, athletes, volunteers, and personnel, but for everyone.”

QRL chief executive officer Ben Ikin said the Bronze accreditation was a strong endorsement of the partnership with Pride in Sport.

“This milestone is a reflection of the work being done by the QRL to further its inclusive practices so that everyone feels welcome in our great game,” Ikin said.

“We’ve made a commitment to provide a safe, fun and inclusive environment for all people, including those of diverse sexualities and genders.

“This national recognition shows that we are on the right path to fostering a culture where every individual can thrive within their club, league and local community.”

"While we continue to drive education through a range of initiatives, we wish to make it clear that the QRL has a zero-tolerance to any form of bullying, harassment or vilification towards people with diverse sexualities and genders.”

Ikin also congratulated the New South Wales Rugby League on their Bronze Tier recognition, and the National Rugby League (NRL) on achieving Silver Status at the annual Pride in Sport Awards, highlighting the game-wide commitment to inclusion.

QRL has delivered a number of key initiatives in its DEI/ LGBTQ+ Pride Action Plan in achieving Bronze Tier status, including delivering Pride in Sport LGBTQ+ Awareness education sessions to all QRL staff and Support Squad members, as well as an Empowering Allies workshop.
