The battle lines are drawn for the 2024 University Rugby League Queensland premiership after all four teams recorded victories in the first two rounds.

Reigning premiers the University of Queensland Hounds and Griffith University Dragons looked good in winning their opening round matches in the traditional season-opening double header on Anzac Day.

But the tables were turned, with both the Hounds and Dragons going down to leave all four teams locked in first place on the ladder.

The Queensland University of Technology Trouts shocked the Hounds at Bert St Clair Oval at Graceville, winning 16-4.

A first-half onslaught opened with an Angus Kempnich try in the eighth minute and produced a 16-0 lead at halftime for the Trouts, with their defence holding strong in the second half.

At Griffith Uni’s Nathan Campus the visitors were dominant early as the University of Sunshine Coast Spartans laid on three tries in the first half.

Corey Baker scored first for the Dragons in just the second minute, but three tries in a seven-minute period to Michael McDonald, Cam Roberts and Cooper Dunning set the Spartans on the way to a 22-14 victory.

Round three matches will see the Spartans host the Trouts on the Sunshine Coast (7.30pm), while the Dragons will cross the river to play UQ at St Lucia (8.15pm).
