Brisbane Tigers bounced back from their loss against Tweed Seagulls in Round 7 with a convincing win against Mackay Cutters in Round 8.
Tigers captain Ryley Jacks said "winning the field position battle" in the first half set his side up to claim the two points.
"We wanted to really start well and I thought we did that, which set us up for the game," Jacks said.
"I think we were patient... sort of punched through them a bit, which was nice... losing Jonah (Pezet) last week, we need to rebuild now, having lost of halfback for the year, so we 're having a think about the style of footy we want to play... I thought we took a good first step in that direction today.
"Obviously a lot of season left in the year and we want to be improving each game... I think we will build on what we did today and move forward."
Jacks said Chris McQueen had been great for Tigers, "just that older head in the middle", and Tristan Powell "has been mighty for us all year".
"And we've got a new fella from Sydney (Jontay-Junior Betham-Misa)... I could go on and name everyone, they all stepped up today, obviously a bit embarrassed from last week, but I think that's good... a bit of a slap in the face, a bit of a reality check, so they really stepped up today," Jacks said.
Jacks said losing Corey Thompson from last year meant the side lost that "big NRL veteran", but replacing him with McQueen was "awesome", especially for him as captain.
"He's someone I can talk to off the field.. he brings experience... premiership winner in the NRL and State of Origin, so when he talks, everyone listens... he's great for the group," Jacks said.
"What we're trying to do every week is to keep building. Not an easy one next week at Bishop Park so we'll regroup, work towards that and hopefully build on what we did today."

Cutters captain Riley Dean said he was disappointed to lose at home.
"Really proud of what the lads did.. we put ourselves in a position to win... I'll put that (loss) on myself, I let them down... and we didn't get it over the line like we should've," Dean said.
Dean said he was particularly proud of his side's defensive efforts in the first half and the tenacity they showed.
"Coming off last week, having a big score put on us, I think the team reacted and responded really well but we just didn't get it over the line," Dean said.
"I take the leadership role personal and I didn't get it over the line for the boys... I wasn't clear enough, didn't communicate enough and I'll cop it."
Dean noted the middles worked hard and he hoped everyone else could repay them next week.
"I have full confidence in the coaching staff and the team... we have just got the execute the game plan that they put in front of us," Dean said.
