Round 6 in review: Junior statewide competitions

There is plenty on the line in the race to the Harvey Norman Under 19 and Cyril Connell Cup finals, as Round 6 of the junior statewide competitions left the door open for a few dark horses.

Round 6 was the second last regular round of the two competitions, while the Mal Meninga Cup moved past the halfway mark.

Here is a wrap of Round 6.

Mal Meninga Cup

The Ipswich Jets claimed the battle of the west in Round 6, as they continue to flex their muscle in the Mal Meninga Cup.

The top six teams will advance to this year's finals series and the second-placed Ipswich delivered a crushing blow to close rivals the Western Clydesdales on Sunday, with a 34-6 victory sending the Clydesdales from fourth to eighth place.

The Mackay Cutters moved into the top six in their place, thanks to a narrow 18-14 victory over the Northern Pride.

Meanwhile, the top three teams remained rock solid in Round 6.

Outside of Jets retaining second place, the unbeaten Tweed Seagulls held onto top spot with a 38-18 victory over the Souths Logan Magpies while the third-placed Burleigh Bears overcame the Brisbane Tigers 30-22.

The Mal Meninga Cup has now passed the halfway point of the regular season, with five weeks remaining.

Harvey Norman Under 19

The stage is set for a potentially thrilling final regular round of the Harvey Norman Under 19.

The way the ladder stands after Round 6 sees the Mackay Cutters in the frame to advance to finals for Pool A, the Western Clydesdales to go through for Pool B and the Tweed Seagulls and Brisbane Tigers to represent Pool C.

But there is plenty on the line in Round 7.

While some results would be a massive ask - with the Sunshine Coast Falcons needing to beat the Clydesdales by a margin of 36 or more - a number of teams are still in with a chance to upset the frontrunners, including the Townsville Blackhawks.

After a strong 24-0 win over the Central Queensland Capras in Round 6, the Blackhawks are just two points behind the Cutters with a stronger for-and-against.

In the final regular round, the Cutters will take on the Capras and just need to win to secure a finals spot. But if they lose, and the Blackhawks overcome the Northern Pride, there could be a shake up to the final standings.

Cyril Connell Cup

The Souths Logan Magpies and Redcliffe Dolphins have pushed ahead in the Pool C race for Cyril Connell Cup finals.

The Western Clydesdales and Townsville Blackhawks are likely to advance for Pools B and A respectively.

And now the Magpies and Dolphins have joined them at the top of the ladder after an exciting Round 6.

The Magpies defeated Tweed Seagulls 36-24 while the Dolphins beat Norths Devils 34-6 for both teams to leapfrog the Burleigh Bears.

The Bears have slipped following an upset 28-18 loss to the Brisbane Tigers.

Next week, the Bears have one last chance to move back into finals contention, when they take on local rivals Tweed while Souths Logan meet Norths and Redcliffe head to Wynnum Manly.
