Round 1 Saturday wrap: Bears hold off fast-starting Devils

Defending premiers Burleigh Bears finished on top of a strong starting Norths Devils in Round 1 of the BMD Premiership.

Bears five-eighth Zahara Temara and centre Shaianne Mcglone both scored doubles in their side's 28-18 win.

Temara said the Round 1 clash was a good test for her side and it showed there was plenty to work on, noting the game was "very scrappy".

"I'm a bit disappointed with that, but I've got to be realistic and I've got to be happy that we got the two points," Temara said.

"We've been mixing it up in trials so that was our first real test as a team.

“We definitely need to build fast because that wasn't our standard... there was a grind period in there and we stayed strong, so I am happy, but a lot of work to do."

Temara said she would be hitting her dad up for some dollars as he always promised money for tries.

“I think it was a bit of a fluke, that’s not usually me (getting the tries), but I’m happy," Temara said.

“My dad used to give me money for every try I got… he hasn’t given me much lately because I haven’t crossed the line… so I’ll be hitting him up."

Temara said there were positives to take from the game, but it was important her side worked on their combinations moving forward.

“We need to work on our combinations and our communication in defence… I wasn’t happy with our defence, especially mine... all of their tries were on my edge so I’m not happy about that," Temara said.

"We need to be better. But I am happy with the win."

Temara said experience duo Tazmin Rapana and Chelsea Lenarduzzi stood up and the backs "were strong and stepped up when our middles were tired".

"That definitely felt like 80 minutes," Temara said.

Devils coach Meg Ward so she was very proud of her side given it was only their second season in the BMD Premiership competition.

“I’m so proud of the girls,” Ward said.

“Burleigh are the standard of the competition every year… every year they go through to the finals. If they don’t win it, they go bloody close, so super impressed with my girls.

“We have a lot of new girls… I think we have about five girls back from last season, so it’s like a whole new squad, so to come out and put in a performance like that was so good.

"I think we started really strong. We’ve just got to be able to hold it. Which unfortunately we weren’t able to today, but it was a really good game to build off.”

Ward said she could not name a stand out.

“Just watching them makes me so excited for what we’ll be able to achieve this year,” Ward said.

Ward said a few injuries hurt her side, but there were so many positive signs heading into Round 2.

“I think they put in a really good effort… Round 2 against Easts Tigers… let’s go," she said.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls won the first Round 1 BMD Premiership game, which was played on March 2.

Elsewhere today, Western Clydesdales won their first game in the competition, with Queensland Maroons captain Ali Brigginshaw scoring the first try of the game.

And Mackay Cutters were too good for Tweed Seagulls.

Brisbane Tigers and Sunshine Coast Falcons play tomorrow in the final game of the round.
