Season 2024 of the BMD Premiership is upon us and there are some talented fresh faces among the coaching ranks.
Four clubs have appointed new head coaches, while the Sunshine Coast Falcons and Western Clydesdales join the competition for the first time.
In this edition we talk to Western Clydesdales coach Mitch Sargent about leading the first women's team in Toowoomba, his desire to have the "hardest working team" in the competition, and the legacy his squad wants to leave.

Coaching history
Sargent's coaching career started in Toowoomba, working through the NRL's game development and with Queensland Rugby League.
His first gig in female footy was in South Burnett while working for the NRL, coaching an under 12s schoolgirls team.
He has been assistant for the Queensland Under 17 Country team and helped out with the Western Clydesdales' Harvey Norman Under 19s.
Q&A with Mitch Sargent
How does it feel to be promoted to head coach of the Western Clydesdales?
"It's a surreal thing personally and a great achievement but I'm just so happy the players and the young ones coming through have an opportunity to play at this level. We have a real opportunity to create an everlasting legacy for those who want to come here and play rugby league."
What is your coaching philosophy?
"I'm team-first. If you ask the girls what Sarge says, it's that I have the hardest working team. My character is to be the hardest working person. All the little things they do away from the field all add up. I can't ask for more with the effort they put in at training. My philosophy is that and also to make sure they enjoy it - the atmosphere and environment is so important. I'm positive the girls have that and they can feel that."
Who would you say is your mentor or strongest influence in coaching?
"I don't think I'd be able to select just one or even just a couple. I've been lucky enough to work alongside and to view some outstanding coaches. I've picked bits and pieces from everyone and put them together the best I can. As a new coach, it's something that you tinker with. I already know there's some things I'd change for next pre-season and some things I think we've done really well in implementing. You have to be willing to adapt and to learn, especially with the group that you have in front of you."
What are your first impressions of your squad?
"They're a great team and great teammates. It's a privilege to be around them and I'm so excited that they'll be able to show our community and the rest of the state what our southwest girls have."
What are your goals for season 2024?
"For the players to enjoy it, that's number one. To love the experience and to be better players, obviously, and good teammates. However we see some go onto NRLW contracts and State of Origin. As a team, finals would be great but we will take it week in, week out. We just want to improve and make sure we're playing our footy as the hardest working team and competing every single week."
BMD Premiership to NRLW: The 2023 graduates
Who within your squad will make their mark in 2024?
"Tara Reinke. She's a local girl and the leadership capabilities are phenomenal. I know Tara is so proud to represent this team and the region. I can't wait to watch her give it her best shot. She's a great person and an exceptional leader."
