Season 2024 of the BMD Premiership is upon us and there are some talented fresh faces among the coaching ranks.
Four clubs have appointed new head coaches, while the Sunshine Coast Falcons and Western Clydesdales join the competition for the first time.
In this edition we talk to Central Queensland Capras coach Julyess Jarvis about his first major coaching role, the young guns on the rise and the importance of honesty in his job.
Coaching history
Julyess Jarvis played A grade rugby league in Townsville and Rockhampton and was heavily involved at the Yeppoon Seagulls.
During the past few years, he has been involved "in the background" for the Central Queensland Capras BMD Premiership team but had not yet held an official coaching role until this year.
Jarvis said he saw the job advertised and put his name and was successful in being named the Capras' BMD Premiership coach.
Q&A with Julyess Jarvis
How does it feel to be promoted to head coach of the Central Queensland Capras?
"I was super excited. I haven't coached before so I didn't really think I would get the role. Overall, I was super excited. I think having known most of the girls already helped out."
What is your coaching philosophy?
"I want to be an open and honest coach. I want to be open to learning and feedback at this early stage of my coaching career. I like to be supportive of what the girls want to do as rugby league players. I want them to learn the game and the fundamentals of rugby league."
Who would you say is your mentor or strongest influence in coaching?
"In my younger days, a coach by the name of Jason Green, he was super helpful in terms of getting me to understand the game at a deeper level. Another coach who taught me a lot of things was a coach called Grant Bell in Townsville. He was a very honest communicator and taught me a lot about toughness and what it means to be playing A grade week in, week out."
What are your first impressions of your squad?
"They're all eager to learn and keen to rip in. That's the first impression I had - that they're all super excited and keen to play rugby league. We have a couple of players with great experience at the next level of rugby league and then some in their first or second year of rugby league. It's a good mix of experience and youth at this stage. There's a lot more on the younger end of the spectrum though."
What are your goals for season 2024?
"Goals as a team are to be a hard-working team that prides ourselves on effort areas of the game. That's what we want to be this year."
Who within your squad will make their mark in 2024?
"Ihndie McLeod has had a really big pre-season coming into her second year of BMD. Lucy White, it will be her first year of BMD and another younger player would be Tori Dakin. She's been in the 19s comp and will make her debut for BMD this weekend as well."
