The 2023 BMD Indigenous Round saw the Souths Logan Magpies return to the top of the ladder, Mackay Cutters claim their second win of the season and Sunshine Coast cause an upset ahead of the final six weeks of the competition.

The PNG Hunters, Brisbane Tigers and Tweed Seagulls also notched up wins in Round 16 while Redcliffe and Townsville battled it out to a draw on Sunday.

It was the competition's hookers and locks in particular who really stood up across the weekend to help their teams record crucial wins as the back end of the season approaches.

Mackay Cutters skipper Sean Mullany earned Hastings Deering player of the match honours as his team overcame the Ipswich Jets in the feature game of the round.

Meanwhile, fellow lock Alec MacDonald was also a standout, making a huge impact for the Brisbane Tigers against the Northern Pride, while rakes Judah Rimbu and Trey Brown proved important for PNG and Central Queensland respectively.

But it was Souths Logan No.9 Blake Mozer who picked up captaincy honours for the Round 16 Hostplus Cup Team of the Week, putting in an influential all-round performance to see the Magpies leapfrog Burleigh into top spot on the competition ladder.

Each round, Queensland Rugby League recognises the 17 best performers and names the Hostplus Cup Team of the Week, presented by Hostplus. These team selections are based not only on statistical data, but also take on board live and broadcast viewings of the games.

Round 16 Team of the Week

1. Keano Kini – Burleigh Bears

One of the breakout stars of this year's competition, Kini has earned back-to-back Team of the Week appearances with another electric performance for the Bears. While his team fell short against the Sunshine Coast Falcons, the young Gold Coast Titans affiliate backed up last week's effort of 300-plus run metres with another 214 run metres at UAA Park. He also set up a try and recorded five tackle busts, one line break assist and one offload. Elsewhere, Redcliffe stalwart Trai Fuller was one of the main dangers for the Dolphins in their draw with Townsville, running for 163 metres, setting up a try and making two tackle busts.

While they couldn't find the two points, Ngatuere-Wroe set up two tries, ran for 59 metres and posted two line breaks, two line break assists, two tackle busts and 16 tackles. In a strong all-round performance, Mozer also ran for 55 metres - averaging 11 metres per run - and had three tackle breaks, two line break assists, one line break and 36 tackles with only one miss in a 63-minute effort. Elsewhere, recent NRL debutant Harrison Graham was strong for the Dolphins, also scoring a try and making 29 tackles.

10. Sam McIntyre – Townsville Blackhawks

Down a man from the opening minute and with two other players on limited minutes, the Blackhawks needed all the support they could get in their draw with Redcliffe and prop Sam McIntyre put his hand up strongly. The North Queensland Cowboys forward played 80 minutes in the middle and made 158 run metres, four tackle busts and 36 tackles for his efforts. Elsewhere, Iszac Fa'asuamaleaui was powerful for Burleigh, making a round-high 42 tackles.
