The 2023 Under 13 Matt Scott Cup was held in Longreach with seven teams participating from Central Highlands, Central West and Mt Isa.
It was a great opportunity for players in these areas to play some different teams with limited opposition in their local competitions.
While the rivalry was seen on the field, so was the sportsmanship shown in every match without one incident occurring.
There were many outstanding individuals who were able to take advantage of their team's performance on the field with al games being competitive.
The final was played between Wanderers from Mt Isa and Blackwater who made the final on a countback from the host team Longreach.
In what was probably the match of the day, which you would expect from a final, Wanderers ran out winners in a game that was decided in the final minutes.
Matt Scott was in attendance and was popular among the young players and their parents, taking many photos with individuals and each team during the day.
He then went on to present trophies to the winning team and players of the carnival.
In his heartfelt speech, he mentioned how good it was to see young players playing on the same fields as he did when he was growing up in the local area where his dreams started.
Ben Palmer, one of the many volunteers who put this carnival together from Longreach Junior Rugby League, spoke to the players about how these carnivals are very special for players in the outback where they meet many friends who they will come across continually over the years whether it be through school sport, rep teams or in general life.
This is what footy does for us all.
