Statewide score wrap: Graf's giant effort inspires Pirates' first point

Noosa Pirates' international recruit Maria Graf has made her mark in an inspired performance to help snare the club's first point of 2023.
Graf came within centimetres of winning the match on the stroke of full time against unbeaten Caloundra, but her sideline conversion attempt fell just short with the scores locked at 16-all.
"It was so close. The last kick, my legs were dying," she said.
The result still sparked jubilant scenes on the field as teammates mobbed Graf in a visual representation of the "huge hug" the Brazilian has felt since joining the club.
"It was really nice from the girls because they told me they never could draw or win against Caloundra and even though I missed the kick it was a good game and I've felt a really good welcome from the girls," Graf said.
"They are amazing with me, even though I can't speak English sometimes, and it feels like getting a huge hug."
Graf said she was learning so much playing alongside people who grew up participating in rugby league, both in terms of skills and communication.
They were both tested on Saturday when she lined up at hooker for the first time.
"It was different playing in another position because I am normally a halfback, but playing as hooker I have freedom to create as a playmaker and I think the communication worked well with our team," she said.
Now she has her eyes on taking on the best the Central region has to offer at the XXXX 47th Battalion carnival in Emerald this weekend.
"I think it is a good opportunity to get one more step toward getting this goal of playing NRLW one day," Graf said.
