Round 6 Saturday wrap: Four big wins kick off ANZAC Round

ANZAC Round is always emotive. There is always plenty of passion, plenty of pride and plenty of big performances.

The Chook Pen was at its best for Wynnum Manly Seagulls' win over Northern Pride, spurring their side on.

Wynnum Manly's Matt Milson, who scored a double, said he was happy to finish with the two points in Round 6 against "a skilful Pride- pack".

"I thought we played really well. Our first 10 minutes, I thought we came out of the blocks pretty strong. The boys dug deep in the forwards," Milson said.

"I think we have a bit to work on with our defence... defence is key to winning games so we need to work on that, but we did pretty good."

The speedy fullback said his tries were on the back of hard work from his teammates.

"It's always good to over the try line but it's a group effort," Milson said.

"Everyone played their part. Our hooker Tyson Smoothy, Delouise Hoeter and Josh Rogers were all good. Gideon Gela-Mosby... he came out of the blocks strong. Everyone did a good job."

Pride coach Ty Williams said "obviously not the result we were chasing".

"I'm disappointed in our own performance. Not the way we played the game, but an accumulation (of things)... we let them out of their end so easily.

"Wynnum is a very good team. We saw Delouise and young Deine Mariner were electric when the game was in the balance.

"The disappointing piece about it is we didn't give ourselves enough chances. They built pressure, built pressure and in the end it tired us out.

"We thought it was there for the taking, but we didn't take it."

Williams said his side knew their discipline needed to be better.

"Especially when we're compressed up and we've got teams coming out of yardage. You saw in that second half we gave away three or four in that area. We've addressed it, we need to make sure we action it now.

"I never question my boys' resilience. They dug in there today but the weight of possession got us in the end."

Williams said Evan Child and Ewan Moore were the standouts for him.

"I thought Evan Child was really good early on... kicked the ball really well. Built some pressure for us. Him and Ewan Moore were really good on that left side," Williams said.

"Hopefully we'll be better next week."

Burleigh Bears proved too good for PNG Hunters in their ANZAC Round clash, scoring nine tries to PNG's four; Jacob Alick scored a double.

Norths Devils claimed the two points in their clash with Mackay Cutters, with a comprehensive 42-16 win.

Redcliffe Dolphins duo Connor Williams and Brayden McGrady both scored doubles for their side in their win against Ipswich Jets.
