Everyone at Burpengary Jets knows Ethan Slater.
The under 9s player is one of the hardest working helpers around the club and is always keen for a chat with senior players, referees and coaches.
Ethan put in a particularly massive weekend, running the tee for two Open Men’s games on Saturday before backing up to do the same for under 13s, under 14s and under 18s teams on the Sunday.
The Storm fan and genuine footy buff - who knows all the statistics and “lives and breathes footy” - has been around the senior sides for the last couple of years and has built a reputation for making everyone smile.
“He sort of just got known as a bit of a character,” president Brad Lord said.
“He’ll sit out there and talk to the guys who are taking the kick, just about random stuff.
“Usually it’s funny, because he’s a funny kid. It could be something as simple as, ‘I’m wearing brown socks today,’ which is funny when they’re trying to organise themselves for a kick.
“A bit of a thing around our club is whenever he’s running back we say, ‘give us a goosey’ and he gives us a bit of a goose step.”
The club rewarded him with some sustenance and new merch – a Jets bucket hat – to wear proudly around the club and provide some sun protection.
Tigers roar on female gala day
Rochedale Tigers celebrated a monumental achievement of getting an under 14s girls team on the park in the South East Female Central Venue gala day at Beenleigh last weekend.
The girls won both of their games 12-0 over Ormeau and West Arana Hills in a fantastic debut.
Each of the junior teams who participated also had the opportunity to complete a Tackle Ready program to ensure those playing their first games of rugby league like the Tigers' girls could do so safely.
The young Tigers also have a pathway developing in front of them with the Tigers also launching their first Open women’s side on the weekend.
