It’s official – the Queensland Maroons are the best sporting team in the state.
Following an emotion-charged victory over the New South Wales Blues in July, the Maroons can now lay claim to being the No. 1 team in the Sunshine State following last night’s Queensland Sport Awards presentation evening.
The Maroons were announced as the XXXX Queensland Sport Team of the Year, with the QSport selection panel recognising the tenacious nature of the team’s 2-1 series victory.
The panel also considered the success of the Aus Crocs Under 23 Men’s White Water Rafting team, Australian Motocross of Nations team and the Australian Women’s 4x100m Medley Relay swimmers, before settling on the Maroons as the state’s best.
The Origin team was superbly led by coach Billy Slater, who himself was a contender for the Queensland Sport Coach of the Year.
Slater narrowly missed the coveted award, however his efforts in guiding the Maroons to arguably one of their greatest series victories in history was recognised at last night’s awards.
QRL chief executive officer Rohan Sawyer congratulated the players, coaches and all staff involved in this year’s series.
“The QSport awards are always extremely sought after and competitive across many sports, so this is a brilliant achievement and a strong endorsement of our Origin program,” Sawyer said.
“Seven players made their Origin debuts this year which makes it even more special, and shows that we are building nicely for the future.”
In a memorable night for rugby league, Maroons great Johnathan Thurston was inducted into the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame, and the 2021 NRL grand final – held at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium – was celebrated as the Queensland Sport Event of the Year.
