Another young Redcliffe Dolphins player will get a crack at fulfilling his dreams in the NRL.
Redcliffe’s Hostplus Cup winger Setu Tu has been awarded a train and trial contract with the Dolphins NRL squad.
He will suit up for training with the foundation Dolphins squad when they assemble for the pre-season in November.
Samoan-born Tu spent time in the Warriors’ NRL system before joining Redcliffe at the start of the 2021 season.
After shaking off some injuries he has excelled in season 2022 by scoring 10 tries in 12 appearances, including two try hat-tricks in his last four matches.
He averages over 150 running metres per game and has produced eight line breaks this season.
The 23-year-old said he was surprised but pleased to be given an opportunity to train under Dolphins’ head coach Wayne Bennett.
“You always hope something like this will happen, but you are never sure,” Tu said.
“I have just been focussing on playing my very best for the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Hostplus Cup and I think that has helped me get this opportunity.
“I can’t wait for November to arrive so I can begin working on my game during an NRL pre-season.”
Dolphins’ chief executive Terry Reader said Tu had earned his place in the squad through some strong performances for Redcliffe, who are undefeated in their last nine matches.
“Setu is a try-scorer, he is dangerous in the air, he is good at carrying the ball and can also produce line breaks - in short, he is a really good all-round player,” Reader said.
“He has really improved into one of the best wingers in the Hostplus Cup.
“We are very glad to be giving another young Redcliffe player a shot at reaching their NRL aspirations with the Dolphins’ NRL team.”
