Pride topple Seagulls in Innisfail

It was a successful homecoming for Northern Pride coach Ty Williams, who like Queensland State of Origin coach Billy Slater, grew up in Innisfail, where the Round 15 clash between 11th placed Northern Pride and fourth-placed Wynnum Manly Seagulls took place on July 16.

Despite the slightly damp conditions, a crowd of close to 1000 observed a hard-fought and entertaining Hostplus Cup clash take place on Innisfail’s Callendar Park Billy Slater Oval.

Wynnum Manly scored twice in the final nine minutes of the match, but it wasn’t enough to catapult them past the home side who led the whole match and held on to win 20-16.

The visitors pressured Pride's try line in the opening minutes of play but it was the Pride who struck first in the 15th minute when fullback Julian Christian scored to take a 6-0 lead.

Five minutes later, they were in again, when lock Ash Little scored and by halftime the Pride held a handy 12-0 lead.

Light rain fell as the second half started and Wynnum Manly again started strongly and this time scored when interchange player Harrison Graham crossed for the first of his two tries in the 51st minute.

The second half settled into close struggle until the Pride went ahead 14-6 in the 67th minute through a penalty goal, and then scored again with nine minutes to go to hold a commanding 20-6 lead.

Wynnum Manly launched a spirited comeback in the final stages of the game, despite being down to 12 men for 10 minutes, scoring  twice with the last try coming in the 77th minute of play but the Pride were able to hold on to claim victory.

Earlier in the day, the Burleigh Bears and Townsville Blackhawks launched the round with their match at Pizzey Park.

Both side came into the match with winning momentum, with the Blackhawks feeling confident following their record-breaking 76-0 win against the Magpies last weekend.

This were looking good for the visitors early and they were in front 12-6 at the halftime break.

The Bears however are alone at the top of the table for a reason and fought back to came away with a 30-16 victory.

Alofiana Khan-Pereira scored a hat-trick to add to his highlights reel for the season.
