Statewide score wrap: Mental edge gives 'Roos first win

The football gods have thrown a number of challenges the way of the Maryborough Wallaroos this year, but the A Grade team finally overcame the odds to take their first win in the Bundaberg competition over the weekend.
The Wallaroos claimed a 36-30 victory over the two-time reigning premiers Past Brothers Bundaberg on Sunday.
It was their first taste of success this season, after notching up five losses previously.
But they could be excused for a number of disruptions, including a COVID outbreak that affected the entire club in Round 2, plus two weeks of washouts with the poor weather across the state.
Maryborough president Scott Robertson said while the young A Grade side have the skills they need, it was a focus on mental strength that finally helped them get across the line against Past Brothers.
“It was a good feeling, it was all smiles,” Robertson said of the win.
“It was a win that had a bit of relief in it. We knew we could do it. We’ve been so close to finding the right game. It just came about out of hard work, probably working more mentally than physically.
“It’s been a tough start to the year. We had to shut the club down with COVID at one point and had two home games rained out. It’s been the mental side of it that we’ve had to work on.”
The Wallaroos went into halftime with a 12-point lead, but Bundaberg managed to find their way back into the game in the second stanza.
Robertson said the team’s mental toughness really shone through in the final minutes, as they managed to keep their lead and take the win.
“We nearly blew it, but we held on and weathered the storm,” he said.
“It showed they really wanted it. They were mentally tough. We’ve been in most games this year but yesterday they held on tighter.
“A game like yesterday, some of the boys now know how far they have to take themselves to get a result in A Grade footy.
“They know how much they have to hurt and what they have to do to get a result. That’s the biggest thing. They went a fair way in learning that yesterday.”
