Four years ago, Brock Hamill had to step away from rugby league to take up the fight against testicular cancer.
Today, his persistence, determination and hard work have paid off, after he was part of the Gold Coast Vikings side that took out this year's XXXX Chairman's Challenge.
The former Canterbury Bulldogs Jersey Flegg forward, who discovered the cancer in 2017 and again in 2018, is cherishing this victory more than most, given the challenges he faced in getting back to the game he loves.
"After struggling a few years ago and going through what I went through, it makes moments like this more pleasurable," Hamill said after Sunday's 18-12 victory over Brisbane Blue.
"I always want to learn from the coaches and other players. To get picked in this, you are the best of A grade and the Gold Coast competitions.
"I want to learn from other people and put that in my game moving forward.
"I want to play hard and go anywhere I can."
Hamill had to step away from the Bulldogs in 2018 after discovering his second tumour and underwent chemotherapy at home on the Gold Coast before receiving the all clear.
He's been working on his rugby league career ever since and was able to return to the Bulldogs for the 2019 season before coming back to Queensland in 2020.
The Gold Coast solidified their XXXX Chairman's Challenge win in the dying seconds of Sunday's game, when winger Queille Murray intercepted to run away with the victory.
They were the only side to win two games across the weekend and will now move into the XXXX League Championship final, where they will meet either Rockhampton or Townsville for the state title.
Hamill, who plays with Southport in the Gold Coast's A grade competition and is a Keebra Park product, said he hoped to be fit for the final in July and believed the Gold Coast had what it took to be crowned best in the state.
"The Gold Coast competition has always been very tough so to be one of the best (teams in Queensland) it would be pretty good," Hamill said.
"We've got some time to train more and gel more together and put those last things together for that."
