Round 4 preview: More stars return to boost Gold Stars

The North Queensland Gold Stars will unleash more talent onto the field in their BMD Premiership match against Burleigh Bears, with new signings Destiny Brill, April Ngatupuna and Hagiga Mosby all named to make their debuts for the club this weekend.

Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons star Brill was the competition’s rookie of the year winner last season and brings with her plenty of experience gained since then, having starred in Queensland’s State of Origin victory last year.

"She'll add some good speed and size around the middle," Gold Stars head coach Gavin Lloyd said.

"Even though she's still very young, Destiny has already achieved quite a bit in her young career and she'll be a great addition to our forward pack."

More recently, Brill and Ngatupuna made their NRLW debuts for the Gold Coast Titans, while Mosby was a breakout talent for the Brisbane Broncos, making the most of her callup to replace the injured Julia Robinson in the line-up, and was Brisbane’s equal-leading try-scorer with four tries in as many games in the NRLW this season.

Despite not having played rugby league prior to 2022, Mosby excelled in the NRLW and was signed last week by the Gold Stars.

The niece of former North Queensland Cowboys star Gideon Gela-Mosby, Mosby has been named in the centres for this weekend's match.

"She's a born and bred North Queenslander and is a massive Cowboys fan," Cowboys elite pathways coach Ben Jeffries told the North Queensland Cowboys.

"Having spent time inside some high-performance rugby programs, Hagi will bring her work ethic and standard straight away, which will help drive our Gold Stars program."

The Bears too have a host of NRLW talent now available for selection, including 2021 season premiership winner Zahara Temara, who was a key player for the Sydney Roosters in their recent triumph at Moreton Daily Stadium.

The club's considerable Broncos contingent, including Lauren Brown, Chelsea Lendarduzzi and Tallisha Harden, are also available to be named in the line-up, as are Titans stars Karina Brown and Tiana Raftstrand-Smith.

The match will be played as a curtain-raiser to the NRL Queensland derby match between the Cowboys and Titans.

This weekend’s Anzac Round feature match will see the Brisbane Tigers take on Central Queensland Capras in a top-of-the-table clash.

The Capras are undefeated so far this season and have named star fullback Tamika Upton to make her first appearance of the season for the club.

A bona fide star of the game, Upton returns to the region after playing most recently with the Broncos in the NRLW, with Hayley Maddick also joining the Capras to play in the halves.

Following a big win last round against the Tigers, the West Brisbane Panthers will be hoping to back up that performance when they host Tweed Seagulls.

Tweed coach Spencer Taplin would be hoping more time spent together at training would have helped his side gel, with the Seagulls going down 26-8 to the Bears in their last match.

“We have some great players who have returned in our spine and I know how well they can play, but those combinations still need a bit more time,” Taplin said following the Round 4 loss.

This week, the Panthers named a strong side which also includes the return of their skipper Julia Robinson, who scored a try in her return from injury for the Broncos in their semi-final loss.

Sunday’s only match will see Wynnum Manly Seagulls host a Souths Logan Magpies side still hunting for their first victory of the year.

However, they may have a big in for this match, with the inspirational Steph Hancock named in their reserves.
