Wynnum Manly trump old rivals

Commitment, cohesion, and coordination was what the Wynnum Manly Seagulls had this week compared to the first three rounds of the season.

And it was what made the difference in a stirring victory over old rivals the Redcliffe Dolphins.

With the 1982 and 2012 premiership-winning teams watching on from the Mitch Cronin Hill, the boys lifted and looked the goods from the get-go.

It was a tight defensive tussle by both teams for the first 20 minutes, with both completing sets and kicking well for field position.

But just on 20 minutes that was broken open by the Seagulls' new signing, PNG player Epel Kapinias, who crashed through the Dolphins defensive line to score on debut near the posts.

The Dolphins were kept inside their 20 for most of the next 10 minutes with some errors and two line dropouts.

It was then that Kalolo Saitaua - who has been playing out of his skin this season - crashed over for a great try just on the 30 minute mark. It was converted by Ben Farr and the Seagulls were out to a 12-0 lead.

You could see the Dolphins were a little stunned and their heads had dropped. Playing conditions were very warm and the Redcliffe side were struggling in the heat.

Then in the 35th minute young Matthew Lyons, making his way back into the Cup side after overcoming an injury from pre-season, crashed over out wide and Farr kicked from the sideline to put the Seagulls up 18-0.

The crowd thought that would be the halftime time score, but the Dolphins had other plans and from a dangerous tackle penalty and a ruck infringement in quick succession by Wynnum, the Dolphins scored in the final minute of the opening stanza.

The teams went for some oranges in the sheds at 18-4.

The second half began much like the first, but Wynnum built momentum early and then - to the delight of the "chook pen" - Lyons dove over for his second try of the afternoon.

Six minutes later, Te Maire Martin ran in untouched from 35 metres out and gently touched the ball to the ground under the posts. Martin has been a real revelation for the Seagulls this season.

Farr converted and from the look on the Dolphins faces, the game seemed over at 30-8.

After some hard hits and physical defence the "chook pen" erupted when perennial favourite Luke Bateman crashed over near the posts and with the conversion the Seagulls were up 36-8.

In the 70th minute and almost against the run of play, the Dolphins scored from a Wynnum Manly error via Eliesa Katoa, which was converted by Cook and the score was 36-14.

It appeared that’s how it would end until the 79th minute when Kapinias scored his second try on debut under the posts and with the conversion made after the siren the Seagulls won the "Battle of the Bay" 42-14.

Great games and notable performances from Bateman, Graham, Saitaua, Matt Lyons and Kapinias proved the difference over a polished Dolphins side.
