Jets flying high as competition reaches final round

Ipswich against Toowoomba is a game for the purists, first played in 1925, the two cities share a highway and plenty of league history.

Toowoomba won the first Bulimba Cup in 1925 and wouldn’t you know it 1926 rolls around and Ipswich wasn’t tolerating it and the green and white won in 1926.

On Saturday at Ipswich, the Jets and Clydesdales will clash again with the young men of the Cyril Connell Challenge representing their history and cities.

The Jets haven’t lost a game and are coming off a 32-16 win over the Bulls.

The Jets coach Jye Tuaiamau-Gadsdon has been moulding his Ipswich team for two years and is happy with what is happening at the moment.

These two teams have clashed already in 2022 with the Jets winning 24-20 in Toowoomba.

“I think the improvement in the Jets this year has come about because of a clearer system in place and the players are really responding to that at the moment,” Tuaimau-Gadsdon said.

“We have had some great performers this season... Lachlan Coburn has been great for us but he is out this week with a concussion. We will miss his work rate.

“Our captain David Leota has been outstanding for us and is developing his game nicely.

“Our halfback Jake Hoegeo has been a sponge this year... he wants to get better and wants to learn and our fullback Harlyn Westlake wasn’t even supposed to be our fullback a month ago but has learned the role and done a great job.

“We are very settled in key positions and that’s been great for us at the moment.

“We have already spoken this week about completing our sets, against the Bulls we had a period where they came back into the game because we kept giving them a chance.”

This is the final regular round of this year's Cyril Connell Challenge and this weekend will see seven games played in total.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls beat the Burleigh Bears 28-14 last weekend and it’s the performance they will want to take forward into their clash against Tweed Seagulls. Last weekend, only having 59 per cent of the ball made it near impossible for the Bears to do anything but defend.

Wynnum Manly led 18-8 at half-time and Evanda Tofilau made 118 metres for the his team, while fullback Saxon Innes was a danger all day.

The black and white Seagulls at Tweed are coming off a 12-12 draw with Brisbane Tigers. It took the Seagulls a while to warm up, but once they did, they held the Tigers to 12 points which will please the Tweed.

The Central Queensland Capras will host Mackay Cutters this weekend and will be buoyed by their win last weekend.

Cody Sanewski was a wrecking ball of defence against the Townsville Blackhawks in the 16-12 victory and the big centre scored his side's first try as well and was lethal out wide throughout the game. The Cutters will want to be careful going out there.

The Cutters beat Northern Pride 24-18 in their last match. Trace Beattie made 129 metres and Timothy Mcevoy made 15 tackles. The Cutters dominated both sides of the ball with 61 per cent of the ball.

Ivey Ezekiel will be a red flag for the Capras, the Cutters edge forward is one to watch.

The Blackhawks lost to the Capras 16-12 and Townsville won’t be happy with how they played their second half. Townsville led at half-time 6-4, but didn’t close the game out.

This match between the Blackhawks and Pride will bring together two northern enemies that are coming off defeats with the Pride losing 24-18 last weekend.

The Pride turned the ball over to the Cutters too much and when they missed 37 tackles, it was too hard to stop the opposition.

Souths Logan Magpies had some star performers, but it wasn’t enough to get the win over the Redcliffe Dolphins last weekend, coming away with a 28-8 loss.

Joseph Tupuse didn’t stop trying and made ground for the Magpies whenever he was called on to take a hit up. His two line breaks always meant the Magpies were in with a chance.

This weekend, the Magpies will take on the Brisbane Tigers

The Tigers draw against Tweed was a strange game last weekend. Tigers winger Tyrell Tuimalealifano scored two tries and did his best to get his side over the line in a tight game.

The Tigers fullback Joshua Donovan has also been in great form for the Tigers.

The Sunshine Coast Falcons had a great day out at the coast last weekend against Western Clydesdale, winning 44-6. From the third minute when Lachlan Hill scored to the 57th minute when Jai Bowden scored, it was all about the Falcons.

Blaine Watson was outstanding in the win with 183 metres while Christian Simpson was a revelation at fullback.

This weekend, they will host Wide Bay Bulls who lost 32-16 to the Jets. Last week, the first half cost them dearly and the Jets got way to 20-0 lead that made it hard for the Bulls from there.

Thomas Morcom made 188 metres of ground and put his hand up whenever the Bulls needed him.

The Devils were sitting back last week watching everyone else go around and will be keen now to put into action what they have learnt when they host Redcliffe Dolphins.

The last time the Devils played they lost 20-10 to the Bears.

Redcliffe will be looking to build on their 28-20 win over the Magpies in their last match. The Dolphins found a rhythm and never let up as they scored at regular intervals.

Burleigh Bears have the bye.
