Statewide competition trials - February 19

Trial matches kicked off in earnest at the weekend for Hostplus Cup clubs, with players getting back on the field to start their preparations for season 2022.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls went down 52-4 to a strong Brisbane Broncos side featuring players with Origin and Test experience, with coach Adam Brideson rotating through an extended and mostly inexperienced squad.

Up north, Northern Pride faced off against some up-and-coming North Queensland Cowboys talents in their match against the Young Guns.

On the Sunshine Coast, home side Sunshine Coast Falcons pipped Ipswich Jets. With new coaches at both teams, it was a valuable hit-out to test out some fresh plays.

This weekend, there is more action across all of the statewide competition teams.

It’ll be a big day in Cairns with the Pride to play local league club Yarrabah at Barlow Park in curtain raiser to the Cowboys v South Sydney Rabbitohs NRL trial match.

The visiting Fiji Kava Kaiviti Silktails will begin their Queensland tour with a match against the Burleigh Bears at Pizzey Park.

The match came about following a brief conversation at the annual Petero Civoniceva Medal presentation night between Bears coach Rick Stone – who previously coached the national Fiji side – and the former Queensland Maroons and Fiji great.

All QRL statewide competitions trial matches will be played on Saturday this weekend.
