On the field, the competition between the players was fierce, with plenty of tries scored in some close games during this year’s XXXX Rivalry Round matches.
Off the field however, rugby league fans united to help support a great cause, raising just under $10,000 for a worthy organisation.
This year, XXXX Rivalry Round was held across two weekends in the Intrust Super - Round 4 and the rematch games in Round 13, as well as in Round 2 of the BHP Premiership, with home grounds selling XXXX-themed socks to raise funds and awareness for Surf Life Saving Queensland.
In total, Queensland rugby league fans raised $9992 from the purchase of 666 pairs of socks across the venues during the initiative.
Surf Life Saving Queensland CEO Dave Whimpey thanked the fans, the participating clubs, XXXX and Queensland Rugby League for their support of the organisation and the work they do.
“We want to thank XXXX, the QRL and the Intrust Super Clubs for the support of SLSQ and this campaign,” Whimpey said.
“Our volunteers had a lot of fun out and about across the two weekends of XXXX Rivalry Round.”
The partnership between Queensland Rugby League and XXXX has been going strong for more than 30 years, so it made sense for them throw their support behind another iconic Queensland institution in Surf Life Saving Queensland.
“XXXX has been a part of the Queensland Rugby League Community and SLSQ community for years,” XXXX sponsorship manager Dave Bruhn said.
“What better way to support our communities than bringing these to icons together as part of XXXX Rivalry Round.
“We are incredibly proud what was achieved through XXXX Rivalry Round and can thank the Intrust Super Cup clubs and their supporters for their support of this initiative.”
