Bears pip Gold Stars in close encounter

The Burleigh Bears held off an almighty challenge from North Queensland Gold Stars to secure a 22-20 win and remain unbeaten in the BHP Premiership competition this season.

The Bears have set the benchmark this season, but the Gold Stars have been building steadily - and showed their skills in the close loss at Pizzey Park.

Both sides scored four tries, with Chelsea Lenarduzzi crossing for a double for the home side, with the slightly more accurate boot of Zahara Temara proving to be the difference in the end, slotting three conversions.

For Bears coach Tahnee Norris, the win came as a relief.

"It was a tough game, the Gold Stars really put it to us," Norris said.

"I think we fought well to get the win.

"We battled through a couple of injuries and the girls roughed it out."

Burleigh's win sets up a battle for the minor premiership next week against Valleys Diehards who are also undefeated so far this season.

The Gold Stars will face off against a rising West Brisbane Panthers side.

Later in the day today, the Tweed Seagulls bounced back to claim their second win of the season with a close result against Central Queensland Capras at McIndoe Park, Emerald.

Playing centre this week, Seagull Tawana Sullivan-Togo scored a double for her side in their 20-14 win where they lead 14-4 at halftime.

Next week, the Seagulls host Brisbane Tigers.

The Capras will be at home to Valkyries in Round 7.
