There will be plenty of smiles when Townsville hosts the inaugural all abilities game of tag rugby league between the Mendi Townsville Blackhawks and Mackay Cutters at Jack Manski Oval.
As a curtain raiser to the Intrust Super Cup and Hastings Deering Colts matches later in the day, it will be the first time the players from both teams will have an opportunity to play against another town and a good crowd is expected for the kick off at 11.20am.
At the conclusion of the game, the players will form tunnels for their respective city’s Hastings Deering Colts teams and clap them onto the field.
There will be two very familiar faces coaching each team with former Maroons and Australian star Martin Bella looking after the Cutters and Cowboys and Maroons legend Matt Bowen coaching the Blackhawks.
This will be a fantastic opportunity for all the players to show their talents and experience the greatest game of all in front of an encouraging crowd and get some advice from two men who have done it all in the game.
The Queensland Rugby League - in conjunction with QRL North - is committed to providing opportunities for all people, regardless of physical or mental statue, embracing the game's motto of being an ‘all inclusive’ game - in line with the QRL diversity and inclusion framework.
This comes off the back of a successful all abilities competition running in Mackay in the past five years with the vision of implementing similar competitions across North Queensland.
The Townsville Blackhawks will be having their final training run this afternoon, whilst the Mackay Cutters will travel up on Saturday afternoon in preparation for the game on Sunday morning.
The Blackhawks and Cutters are to be congratulated for embracing this game and kitting up all the players for their game, as well as providing them with gear to wear prior to and after the game.
