Former Storm, Kangaroos and Queensland star Will Chambers has signed on at the Sharks for the remainder of the 2021 season.

The premiership-winning centre, who was once the villain in a fierce rivalry with the Sharks dating back to the period surrounding the 2016 Grand Final, Chambers arrived in the Sutherland Shire on Sunday and is ready to put his best foot forward in bringing his experience and class to the Cronulla side this season.

“It’s a bit different, it’s all a bit new at the moment, I’m taking it all in, getting to know the boys,” Chambers said following his first training session at the Sharks.

“Exciting times ahead, I look forward to fitting in and to being a part of something special this year. I’m excited about pulling on the Sharks jersey and being a part of this special organisation, an organisation that’s very tough and very competitive,” he added.

Chambers comes to the Sharks after 12 seasons and 218 NRL games at the Melbourne Storm, which was followed by an interrupted two years at Japanese rugby franchise the Suntory Sungoliath where COVID intervened and saw the competition shut down.

While at the Storm Chambers would also represent Queensland in 13 Origin games and Australia in seven Test matches.

Now with an opportunity at the Sharks, Chambers hopes to bring his renown intensity to his performances on the field, while at the same time assisting in the development of the young Cronulla outside backs.

“I’m competitive and I’d like to bring that here to the Sharks. And there’s some special young boys here at the moment and I’d love to see them succeed. I’ve been lucky enough to play in a special system down in Melbourne and I’d love to bring some of that experience here to Cronulla,” Chambers said.

Chambers trained strongly on Monday and reported no injury issues, with the Sharks to now assess the fitness of the 32-year-old before charting the next plan of attack as to a potential return to the field.
