Unique fundraising idea a real catch in Miles

A little bit can go a long way.

Like most sporting clubs in small towns, Miles District Rugby League has struggled to keep volunteers and raise much needed funds to keep functioning.

Over the last couple of years, the Devils – with a very proactive committee - has embarked on new strategies to not only benefit the club, but the town of Miles as well.

They are working to provide facilities at Centenary Oval for all to enjoy, but this also costs time and money... but fortunately, the club is lucky to have so many people (business and private) who are willing to help contribute to its success.

This has been particularly prevalent, even through the tough COVID-19 lockdown period.

One such contributor is Clayton Kuhl from Sandfly Lures Dalby.

Kuhl is a former Devils player, coach and president, and it is the generous gesture that Clayton has done for the club that has had many looking on in awe.

Handcrafting fishing lures at his place in Dalby, when he saw the old toilet block at Centenary Oval being demolished to make way for its upgrade, he came up with an idea that was so crazy it might just work.

He asked his good friend and former Devils teammate Ken Brown - me - to get him a piece of timber from the old dressing sheds, and he would manufacture 13 fishing lures in Devils colours that could be auctioned to raise funds for the club - one lure for each player that is typically on a football field for a team at one time.

I grabbed a length of 4 x 2 metre spotted gum out of the old dressing sheds and took it to Kuhl. He then worked his magic and came up with 13 great lures to go under the hammer.

These were auctioned one at time over 13 nights on the Sandfly Lures Dalby Facebook page.

Bidding was a bit slow for the first few, but once people realised the significance of owning one of these Lures; former players, children of past players and collectors really showed an interest.

Overall, the club raised a whopping $3630 with the top-priced lure going for $450... number 10 being the most popular.

The average price of a lure was just short of $280... a figure that made the Devils old boy shake his head in astonishment.

The club is extremely fortunate to have people like Kuhl who are willing to put up their hand and help.

The result of the auction is incredibly pleased and his very generous assistance and gesture cannot be thanked enough.
