Two of Queensland's three NRL teams, the Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys, will clash at Redcliffe’s Dolphin Stadium on February 27 for a trial match prior to season 2021.
Brisbane Broncos legend Alex Glenn, who has played all of his 267 NRL games for the Broncos and enters his 13th season with the club in 2021, will be honoured with a testimonial game.
The game will give fans and members a chance to thank Glenn for his loyalty and commitment to the Club.
Winner of the Broncos’ Most Consistent Player Award for a record five times, Glenn is a much-loved figure amongst the Brisbane faithful, who are sure to turn out in big numbers to honour the backrower.
The Broncos and Cowboys are renowned for their close contests and this pre-season clash promises to be no different as final touches are put on preparations for the NRL season.
Both teams will be close to full-strength for a dress rehearsal for Round 1, with a number of State of Origin stars and new signings on display.
“I was happy to just make my NRL debut but to have played for more than a decade for this great club, it’s a dream come true," Glenn said.
“To have a testimonial game is something I never could have imagined, so it will be awesome to get out to Redcliffe and share it with my family, friends and all the Broncos members and fans who have supported me along the way.
“As a team, we are working really hard and preparing well for the 2021 season, and this game against the Cowboys will allow us to fine tune our preparations.”
Broncos CEO Paul White said the Broncos were delighted to honour someone who had shown such a long-term commitment to the Broncos.
"Alex has been with us since he was a teenager and is favourite of the members, our supporters, sponsors, and of course his teammates," White said.
“It would be great to see as many people as possible get out to Dolphin Stadium to pay tribute to someone whose career has been marked by his longevity in the game and his commitment to his values both on and off the field.”
The Broncos trial will serve as new Cowboys head coach Todd Payten’s first official match in charge after taking the reins in November.
“We’re excited to be playing the first game of what is essentially a new era for our club against our traditional rivals Brisbane down in Redcliffe,” Cowboys head of football Micheal Luck said.
“While it’s disappointing we won’t hold a trial in North Queensland this year, given the restrictions we continue to face and the shortened pre-season it’s understandable and we have our fingers crossed next year we will return to our regular schedule and host a home trial.
“Our coaching staff and our players are fully focused on putting our best team on the park for what shapes as an important trial against the Broncos.”
Tickets go on sale to the general public via Ticketek at 12pm on Monday, January 25.
