Don: 'I've got to prove I am worthy' for new Titans deal

After feeling stale and sick of football last year, rejuvenated Titans winger Anthony Don has embraced the methods of new coach Justin Holbrook and wants to prove he is worthy of a new contract.

The club's all-time leading try scorer is a free agent at the end of the year and his future will be tied to whether he can continue his impressive strike rate.

With 77 tries from 130 games he has been a reliable and highly valued contributor after starting his NRL career relatively late at the age of 25.

The 32-year-old scored a cracking try in the 28-23 win over the Wests Tigers on Sunday after he leapt high to snaffle a precision Ash Taylor kick.

The former Grafton Ghost intends to be scoring tries for the Gold Coast next year and has gritted his teeth for the challenge ahead.

"I’ve got to prove that I am worthy of staying. That is my main focus," Don said leading into the clash with the Rabbitohs at Bankwest Stadium on Saturday.

"I am not really putting a timeline on it. My body is feeling good at the moment. I feel fresh and young in the mind.

"I would love to keep playing and stay at the Gold Coast but with the industry we are in you don’t really know what is around the corner."

The Titans had a tumultuous 2019 season with former coach Garth Brennan’s tenure ending and the club claiming the wooden spoon.

Don was dropped late in the season but has bounced back to be enjoying his football under Holbrook.

"I feel completely rejuvenated under the new coaching system," he said.

"Last year everyone was a bit sick of footy and it was a chore to come to training whereas this year it has been a breath of fresh air.

"I am sure the results will keep on improving."

The Titans are wary of a South Sydney side hungry for a win after three consecutive losses.

"They have got James Roberts and Cody Walker coming back and they will be a new team with those two," Don said.

"We know we are going in as underdogs against a big pack and with Latrell [Mitchell] out the back and other sharp outside backs."

The Titans have been boosted by the return to form of five-eighth Ash Taylor, who had a hand in four tries against the Wests Tigers after conceding an intercept four-pointer with an errant pass.

"It was really good to see, especially after the intercept early in the game. Some players can go hiding after that but we all spoke to him and said 'forget it'," Don said.

"Moments later he kicked a 40/20 and that was a real momentum changer. It was good to see him play with freedom which is something that had probably been missing for a little bit.

"Ash has been working really hard on his kicking game and that was the perfect kick that allowed me to get a clean jump and catch of the ball [for a try].

"I am really proud of Ash and the work he has been putting in."
